Staff Attorney 

(Tenant Power Toolkit Focus) 

 (Full-Time, Exempt Position) 

Inner City Law Center (ICLC) is a nonprofit law firm located in the Skid Row neighborhood of Los Angeles. We are looking for extraordinary people to help us end homelessness in Los Angeles. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect, ICLC fights for justice for low-income tenants, working-poor families, people who are disabled or experiencing homelessness, people living with HIV/AIDS, and homeless veterans. 

Position Description: The Staff Attorney for the Tenant Power Toolkit is part of the Tenant Defense Project and is primarily responsible for our team’s work on the Tenant Power Toolkit. They are lead on the legal development for the Toolkit, including incorporating legal changes, addressing issues, and ensuring proper functioning of the Answer Tool. They will also work closely with Toolkit partner organizations on Toolkit expansion, outreach, workshops, and tenant assistance. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Function as ICLC lead on legal development for the Tenant Power Toolkit. Work closely with Toolkit partners to update and ensure the proper functioning of the Toolkit. Primarily responsible for tracking, researching, and implementing significant legal changes across California into the Toolkit, including the passage of new tenant protections. Primarily responsible for updating, fixing, and improving the legal framework and defenses in the Answer Tool. 
  • Lead efforts to expand and improve the Tenant Power Toolkit, including expansion to new tools and improvement of user experience.  
  • Oversee ICLC’s organization-facing and tenant-facing outreach efforts for the Tenant Power Toolkit. Help create community education and outreach materials, assist in trainings, and promote usage of Toolkit statewide.  
  • Manage Tenant Power Toolkit partner organizations, help lead monthly partner meetings, and assist Supervising Attorney with grant tracking, reporting, and narrative as needed. 
  • Act as first point of contact for primary Tenant Power Toolkit partners, including to provide legal support, answer questions that arise from tenant communication, and help address legal/technical issues with the Toolkit as they arise.  
  • Provide substantive support to project staff as they interact with Toolkit users and handle e-filing and serving documents generated by the Toolkit.  
  • Work closely with Supervising Attorney to draft policies and procedures to improve workflows for referred tenants and integrate TPT into existing services.  
  • Work closely with Supervising Attorney to create and implement vision and priorities for Toolkit development, training, outreach, workshops, and partnerships.  
  • Participate in community outreach events, Tenant Power Toolkit weekly workshops, and other external partnership-building opportunities as needed.  
  • Guide and train other program staff, including fellows, paralegals, less experienced attorneys, law clerks, external entities and pro bono partners.  
  • Actively participate in community groups and coalitions on issues impacting ICLC clients and client communities, such as access to the courts, access to public benefits, the availability of affordable housing, and systemic racism.  
  • Help develop and maintain relationships with funders, government agencies, and community-based organizations.  
  • Partner with pro bono counsel to expand the volume of services that ICLC can provide.  
  • Maintain timesheets as directed.  
  • Adhere to all ethical responsibilities, including the Rules of Professional Conduct, which establish standards of legal ethics and professional responsibility for lawyers in California.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

Hiring Criteria: Commitment to ICLC’s mission and values. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong work ethic. Have an organized and detail-oriented approach. Excellent negotiation skills. Ability to assume responsibility quickly and work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Ability to use good judgment, multitask, and meet short-notice deadlines. Ability to interact with a wide range of clients in a kind, appropriate, client-centered manner. Access to reliable transportation. Membership in the California Bar is required. A minimum of 1-2 years of litigation experience.  

This position will serve a nine-month probationary period. ICLC has a hybrid work environment with remote and onsite work available.

Compensation: Salary ranges from $78,000 - $105,000 and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits.
