Looking for an energetic self-directed person who enjoys communicating with seniors, is an organized, effective manager, and is at ease working on a computer.

We are One Community

One Community promotes equitable access to resources and opportunities in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Collaborating with partner organizations, we offer vocational, recreational, educational, artistic, social, and spiritual programs that change people’s lives. Covid taught us how much emotional and cognitive damage can be inflicted on seniors by extended isolation. In response, we created the Sharing Network.

The Program

The Sharing Network is a way for seniors who face limited social interaction, even as the pandemic recedes, to get together for rich, fun, and interesting conversation groups over the phone. Most participants are residents of public housing who lack internet access. Fifteen diverse groups are offered each week, and the roster of groups changes each 5-week term. Each group is designed and led by an amazing volunteer moderator. Groups include Making and Enjoying Food, Bible Study, Crocheting, Moving and Stretching, R&B and Soul Hits of the 60’s and 70’s, Exitos de la Música Afro-Latina (en Español), Black and Brown Power in Brooklyn, Brain Fitness, Gospel, and others that focus on reminiscing and talking. Groups are kept small to foster interaction and social cohesion. The result is the  creation of small communities that previously isolated seniors describe as their second family or their sisterhood or the answer to their depression.
