Job Description:

The Community Organizer position will focus on reaching out to essential Mission stakeholders and continue to build active community involvement and empowerment through United to Save the Mission, a coalition of 16 community organizations and nonprofits, while reinforcing the existing function, structure, and activities of USM in alignment with its Mission statement: (below)

United to Save the Mission is a coalition of community groups and individuals that protects vulnerable communities against gentrifying forces and narratives and fighting for the Mission neighborhood by leveraging our intersectionality and honoring our interdependence to one another.

We support and celebrate the livelihoods of American Indian and Latinx cultures, LGBTQ+, working class and immigrant residents, artists, organizing spaces, community-serving businesses, nonprofits, industrial spaces, and unhoused neighbors struggling through the trauma of houselessness.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Coordinating attendance, talking points, letters of support and testimonies for USM sponsored actions and events, including USM and neighborhood meetings, campaigns, and any major city hearing that USM targets.
  • Regularly engage with the 16 USM groups and neighborhood cultural organizations, nonprofits and LatinX groups to foster participation in USM activities and build and strengthen ongoing high impact relationships.
  • Establish and deepen relationships with other Mission District and anti-gentrification coalitions across the City.
  • Attend all USM Assembly, community development committee meetings, and other committee meetings as is necessary to stay on top of the pulse of the work of USM and facilitate the general workflow.
  • Regularly coordinate USM social media accounts to keep USM callouts and events current, as well as posting member organization announcements and events in USM social media timelines. (Facebook, Twitter, Mission Word Blog and possibly expand to Tik-Tok or Instagram).
  • Review and support major USM documents to be released such as press releases, project appeals, equity agreements, and other important items, under the guidance of the final decision-making authority of the Assembly.
  • Help maintain existing calendars and membership lists.
  • Bi-weekly check-ins with personnel committee to structure work.

Preferred Experience:

Candidate should have significant leadership experience in community organizing and be a self-directed and well-organized campaigner who takes initiative. The candidate should have experience working with LatinX nonprofit and community organizations in the Mission District of San Francisco.

Candidate should be proficient in using social media to amplify campaigns. Experience and familiarity with planning and land use, and/or work on housing equity issues is strongly preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish is required.

Candidate should be comfortable working remotely or in a shared office workspace using Zoom, Google Drive docs, email, text and phone calls as primary communication tools. A shared office workspace is available, if needed.
