About the Controller Role: 

BRIC seeks a Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities. Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the board finance and audit committee and will work closely with the senior leadership team. The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations of a budget of $17MM and supervise a team of 1-2 staff members including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration.


What You’ll Do in the Role:

The Controller will be responsible for the following in addition to any other project as assigned by their manager, the Chief Finance Officer:

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead all accounting functions including net assets, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, investment tracking, fixed assets, cash management, bank reconciliation and general ledger accounting.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Coordinate all audit activity, 990s, month end close, reconcile all accounts on a monthly basis.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the organization’s financial status.
  • Ensure that the organization has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits.
  • Work closely with program leaders and their staff, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.
  • Partner with the CFO, senior leadership, and the human resources (HR) and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, HR, and IT functions.
  • Oversee  1-2 full time staff.

  • Qualifications:
  • CPA is highly preferred. 
  • 5-7 years of nonprofit accounting experience, including at least 1-2 years senior finance management role. 
  • Experience with Sage Intaact, preferred.
  • Good judgment; capable of evaluating alternative methods to achieve quality outcomes.
  • High level of accountability, responsibility, and dependability; results- and solution-oriented. 
  • A positive attitude, self-discipline, and self-awareness.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, ability to think outside of the box.
  • Dedication to process, procedures, and documentation. 
  • Ability to structure tasks and balance competing priorities and multiple stakeholders. 
  • Strong communication, both in person and through modern tools and platforms. 
  • High level of interpersonal skills, integrity, and respect of confidentiality. 
  • Experience managing a team with an ability to attract, develop, and retain top talent. 
  • Focus on the big picture, seeing beyond individual responsibility. 
  • Exceptional collaboration skills. 
  • The successful candidate will possess these skills and attributes:
  • Strong leadership skills with a focus on listening, collaboration and respect and an enthusiasm for coaching others. 
  • Deep knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for nonprofits. 
  • Excellent judgment, self-direction, and creative problem-solving. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication.

Other Things to Know:

  • Compensation: The annual salary range for this position is $110,000 - $115,000. 
  • Status and location: This is a full-time, exempt role based in our Brooklyn office.

BRIC currently pays 100% of the premium for employee medical, dental and vision coverage starting on the first of the month after 2 months of employment.
