    Descrição

    The Human Resources Director develops and executes human resources strategy and leads the day-to-day human resources functions at Americans United for Separation of Church and State, including recruitment and hiring, onboarding and offboarding, performance management, and benefits administration. They ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations, provide guidance and support to supervisors and staff, and resolve employee relations matters. The Human Resources Director also supports organizational culture-building efforts and DEI initiatives. They work to identify, propose, and execute ways to improve the organization’s human resources systems and processes. The Human Resources Director reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Implement Human Resources Strategies, Policies, and Procedures

    • Assess AU’s Human Resource systems, processes, and policies and recommend and implement improvements where needed to maximize organizational effectiveness and efficiency
    • Develop and implement policies and procedures related to onboarding and orientation, performance management, benefits, or other human resource functions
    • Ensure compliance with all state, federal, and local policies and laws
    • Review, track, and document compliance with mandatory trainings

    Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

    • Support staff and leadership in developing and implementing internal programs and initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • Ensure completion of DEI-related trainings for managers and employees
    • Provide support in resolving employment-related issues, ensuring consistency and equity in handling employee situations and administering policies and procedures

    Payroll and Benefits Administration

    • Administer AU’s compensation system, including the implementation of annual raises and updating of compensation-related documents
    • Administer company benefits and serve as a resource to staff for benefits questions
    • Execute leave processes, including FMLA, parental leave, etc., and track leave balances

    Recruitment and Hiring

    • Lead talent recruitment efforts, including posting position descriptions, coordinating the hiring process with hiring managers, screening candidates, and conducting reference and background checks
    • Develop, recommend, and implement strategies to attract, hire, and retain a diverse workforce
    • Manage communications with candidates during the hiring process
    • Manage the onboarding, orientation, and offboarding processes

    Human Capital Management

    • Recommend learning and development programs and initiatives that provide internal development opportunities for employees
    • Develop and lead trainings on topics such as performance management, DEI in talent acquisition, and work planning
    • Lead the performance review process, ensuring that staff and supervisors receive the necessary forms on schedule and providing support as needed
    • Collaborate with the leadership to plan full staff retreats and team-building activities
    • Design and administer employee engagement surveys
    • Advise supervisors regarding appropriate resolution of employee relations issues
    • Collaborate with the internship program manager to ensure a positive and productive experience for interns.

    Skills and Experience

    • Minimum of 8 years prior related work experience.
    • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience.
    • SHRM or comparable HR certification is preferred.
    • Experience in the nonprofit sector and motivated by working for a mission-driven organization.
    • Skilled at listening, learning, and finding resolutions while maintaining professional integrity.
    • Ability to work strategically and collaboratively across the organization, including serving as a trusted advisor to both leadership and staff.
    • Ability to work well under pressure with tight deadlines and multiple priorities.
    • Experience training others on human resources practices and building strong relationships across diverse leadership styles.

    Compensation & Benefits

    The salary range for Director-level positions at AU is $112,200 to $132,600 for a candidate with 8 to 22+ years of experience. Employees who reside in higher-cost areas, including the Washington, DC metro area, receive an additional five percent salary increase. The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined by the number of years of relevant experience they bring to the role and their qualifications. Americans United offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes employer-paid premiums for health care, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, 401(k) with match, and commuter subsidy.

    Work Location

    This role is based in the Washington, DC area. The successful candidate may work remotely work up to four days per week and will be required to attend occasional in-person staff meetings and events.
