High School Optical Science Instructor (Summer 2022)

The STEP Academy at Baruch College is seeking to fill a summer instructor position for the high school program. The course will introduce high school students to an Optical Science for a month. The goal of the course is to engage students in an exploratory science experience, not provided in a standard classroom. We are looking for an instructor to engage with the students in this interdisciplinary course that will study concepts such as the speed of light and its importance, the principle of color, and the wave nature of light. Students will gain insight into the common applications of light in devices such as lasers, cameras, eyeglasses, microscopes, and telescopes.  

The Summer 2022 Program will operate for 15 sessions, July 5th through July 28th (Monday through Thursday only) from 9:30am -2:00pm.

Specific Duties

• Plan, teach and prepare materials for about 20 students
• Evaluate student and group performance often
• Provide staff with measurable results in student learning through assessments
• Monitor and maintain student attendance records 

Qualifications

   -Required:

• Availability each program day from 9:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
• Experience in a tutoring or teaching capacity
• Works well under pressure and possess good interpersonal skills with teenagers
• Enthusiasm for subject

 -Preferred:

• Major/ strong background in a STEM field
• Prior experience with middle or high school students
• Possess innovative and creative instruction methods
• Have a strong classroom management style
• Demonstrated ability to create an engaging learning environment for students
