Raise The Floor Alliance (RTF) is an Illinois based non-profit and legal clinic that supports exploited workers in low-wage industries to know, defend, and improve their employment rights. RTF was founded by Arise Chicago, Centro de Trabajadores Unidos, Chicago Community & Workers Rights, Chicago Workers Collaborative, Latino Union, Warehouse Workers for Justice, and Workers’ Center for Racial Justice. As a backbone organization and space for collective action, RTF brings strength to our community partners by providing research, communications, policy, and legal support for campaigns that promote safe, dignified, and stable work.
Overview of Role
The Healthy Work Legal Organizer’s main role will be to survey RTF clients and leaders about health, safety, and other employment issues in low wage industries. The knowledge gained will be used to direct the strategic focus of the Healthy Work Collaborative, a project with the Cook County Department of Public Health. The Organizer will also support the legal team in educating workers about their rights via community workshops and specialized trainings. Finally, the Organizer will support the legal team to represent workers to vindicate their employment rights.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
● Collaborate with attorneys and legal staff to survey current and previous clients about their experiences related to health and safety at work, including access to paid sick days, employer provided healthcare, workers compensation and more; additionally, gather info about trends related to disability accommodations arising from COVID-19 pandemic complications, workplace injuries arising from employer cost-cutting, and potential retaliation for complaining about any of the above
● Cultivate strong relationships with co-workers, clients, and worker center leaders
● Collaborate with Legal Director, Staff Attorneys, and Paralegal to organize community-based workshops and trainings related to workplace health and safety topics
● Support the legal team to represent low-wage workers in litigation to vindicate their employment rights
● Document qualitative and quantitative information for preparing reports
Qualifications & Skills
● A demonstrated commitment to racial, economic, and social justice
● A demonstrated commitment to building a powerful, vibrant, worker-led labor movement that utilizes many tactics including policy transformation, litigation, and direct action workplace/industry organizing
● A minimum of 1 year working or volunteering with a grassroots, community, policy, or legal organization
● Spanish language proficiency is required
● Demonstrated ability to work well in teams and collaborate generously across departments and organizations
● Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends during key deadlines or campaign flashpoints
● Ability to set, manage, and achieve goals under a fast-paced timeline, with a strong ability to multitask
● Openness to ongoing learning and coaching from colleagues at every level, exhibiting a solution-oriented attitude and always leading with high integrity, camaraderie, and professionalism
● Proficiency in technology tools including office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and familiarity with Google services (Mail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc.)

This is a full-time position with a salary at $55,000-60,000 based on qualifications and experience.
