About the Role: The Director of Post-Placement Counseling oversees the academic and social-emotional well-being of Prep’s 700+ students who are currently enrolled in 7th-12th grade in New York City independent day schools and boarding schools across the Northeast. The Director of Post-Placement Counseling oversees a team of Post-Placement Counselors, people of color who are themselves graduates of selective colleges and have experience with the independent school journey. To monitor our students’ progress, these counselors meet individually on a monthly basis with our day school students and three times a year on campus with our boarding school students. The Director of Post-Placement Counseling seeks to maintain relationships with our students, parents, and partner schools. In addition, the Director oversees activities open to all Prep 7th-9th grade students, including cultural and sporting events. These activities foster strong relationships among Prep students and contingents while encouraging personal growth.

The Director of Post-Placement Counseling serves on the Executive Staff and manages a department of twelve full-time staff as well as multiple part-time employees and consultants. The role is responsible for:


  • Overall: Helping ensure all Prep students thrive in their independent schools.
  • Programming: Providing opportunities for students to connect with their contingent mates and other Prep students through a range of activities that provide social and academic enrichment.
  • Outplacement: Overseeing outplacement coordinator’s work with K-8/9 independent schools on the high school placement of Prep students.
  • Academic Support: Administering Academic Enrichment program, summer math, and English classes for upper school students who need additional support.
  • Summer Immersion in Residence: Collaborate with the Director of the PREP 9 Preparatory Component to initiate post-placement counseling support for second summer students.
  • Tutoring and Testing: Coordinating one-on-one tutoring support for students outside of school as needed and facilitating any necessary psychological testing.
  • Financial Support: Administering Student Emergency Fund.


  • Overall: Helping parents navigate the independent school landscape.
  • Financial Aid: Overseeing the provision of assistance to parents with schools’ annual financial aid application process as needed.
  • Family Services: Liaising to provide support to help with unforeseen circumstances that can affect a student’s success.
  • Programming/In-Service: Developing workshops for parents on pertinent topics.
  • Partner Schools
  • Maintaining relationships and working closely with partner schools (day and boarding), including key school administrators.
  • Responding to schools when they need help/more information to support a Prep student or family.
  • Providing each school with a Post-Placement Counselor who is engaged and responsive.
  • Partnering with schools to help support Prep students.


  • Leading and managing a department of twelve staff to be responsive to students, schools, and parents’ needs.
  • Fostering among the Post-Placement Counseling staff a “customer service” mentality and an appreciation of their critical role in supporting the achievement of Prep students.
  • Helping the three boarding school counselors plan their travel schedules to visit school campuses and the eight-day school counselors to arrange theirs.
  • Coordinating weekly consultation meetings and ongoing counseling staff trainings during the school year in conjunction with the Senior Staff Psychologist.
  • Developing and implementing multi-day summer and year-round training schedules for the counselors, drawing on internal and external resources.
  • Working with counselors to plan programming for students and parents, such as the annual retreat for boarding school students, periodic affinity groups, and parent workshops.
  • Managing travel and other expenses to budget.

Student Records/Technology

  • Ensuring student records are accurately maintained in the database, and comprehensive student reports are provided as a matter of record in the database.
  • Utilizing technology to make department operations more efficient.


  • Working closely with the Director of Academic Programs, Director of Leadership Development, and Director of Undergraduate Affairs to ensure smooth transitions for students at each stage of their Prep for Prep journey.
  • Developing and maintaining effective communication and close working relationships with members of the Executive Staff.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the organization to support Prep’s mission.


  • Extensive knowledge of independent day and boarding schools; experience with New York City and New England schools preferred.
  • Demonstrated record of success in strategic thinking, relationship building, and planning.
  • Experience working closely with high-achieving students and parents of color.
  • Extensive supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience working with school administrators and faculty.
  • Experience or training in diversity, equity, and inclusion work is preferred.
  • Master’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred.
