ABOUT US

A Place Called Home is a dynamic, non-profit youth and community center in South Central Los Angeles. APCH provides educational programs, counseling, mentoring, music, dance and art classes, fitness and health and wellness opportunities. As youth participate in our programs, they discover interests and talents and develop a better sense of themselves and their place in the world around them. Our goal is to increase the likelihood that youth will stay in school, pursue higher education, attain viable jobs, and become active community members capable of making positive change in the world in which they live.


SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Director the Bus Driver will transport members for A Place Called Home as needed.

 JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

  • Pick up/drop off students to designated destinations 
  • Transport members on field trips 
  • Ensure students and staff adhere to safe transportation practices
  • Report any safety or mechanical concerns to the Director of Operations and Transportation Coordinator immediately
  • Ensure vehicles are kept clean (inside and out)
  • Fill vehicles with gas as needed
  • Plan and monitor routes for maximum efficiency
  • Communicate any delays or changes in schedule with school partners, APCH Membership team members, Director of Building & Safety, Transportation Coordinator and any other relevant parties
  • Provide administrative assistance to Transportation Coordinator
  • Pick up in-kind donations as requested 
  • Adhere to the highest ethical and professional standards and values at all times
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

To perform this important job successfully, the Bus Driver must be able to fulfill all of the elements of the Job Description to the highest standard, and be able to work well with colleagues in a high energy, collaborative environment with open communications. All employees are expected to contribute to ongoing growth and improvement in their departments via excellent job performance. To be successful in this role the Bus driver will focus on achieving excellence of service and performance in the five core competencies identified by the agency: integrity & trust, adaptability, accountability, learning and development and compassion. As well as the department competencies. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

Education/Training/ Experience

  • 1 Year driving large passenger vehicles (preferably youth population)
  • Class B license with Passenger & School Bus endorsement
  • School Bus Certification preferred
  • Defensive driving training preferred with a clear (Excellent) driving record (DMV record required)

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Able to work in a dynamic and high noise level environment typical of a youth center
  • Frequent sitting 
  • Current medical clearance certificate (as required with Class B license)
  • Continual use of vision as required by driving exam 
  • Lift up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds occasionally (donation pick-ups)  
  • Able to communicate and convey accurate information
  • Submit to Drug and Alcohol testing as required by the state

Drivers must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.

APCH COVID-19 Vaccination Policy

All new hires must provide proof of their first dose of the vaccine on the first day of employment, if not fully vaccinated, and will have 30 days from their date of hire to complete their COVID-19 vaccination and submit proof of completion to the organization’s HR department. All fully vaccinated staff must also provide proof of their booster vaccine once eligible.
