THE ROLE

Teach For America Los Angeles seeks a Senior Managing Director to play a key role in our region’s efforts to grow and strengthen our network to build the support and engagement we need from our diverse coalition of stakeholders across three key workstreams: alumni engagement, school and district partnerships, and policy and advocacy. More specifically, our 3,400 local alumni, the district and charter partners who hire our corps members, local elected/appointed leaders and state-wide policy collaborators, and members of our Alumni Council and The Collective Board. This work must include effective and rigorous landscape analysis, stakeholder investment and engagement as well as analysis, utilization, and communication of our impact and stakeholder data as a tool to clarify and influence various narratives. 

You are responsible for setting the vision and direction for the External Affairs team, meeting or exceeding the relevant key performance indicators, and effectively coaching and developing the leaders who oversee the Alumni and Strategic Partnerships teams.  Additionally, you must set and uphold a high bar through clear expectation-setting for the quality of the team’s planning, outreach, interactions, and outcomes. Across all workstreams, you will partner closely with the Executive Director and other members of the regional leadership team (Regional Advisors) to influence others and achieve outcomes.

This role directly aligns to our aspirations to build a thriving community of external partners contributing to a powerful movement and establishing the infrastructure and support necessary to fuel the next generation of leaders working towards educational equity in Los Angeles. You will be a critical voice in regional initiatives as a member of the Regional Advisory Team and will report directly to the Executive Director.

THE PERSON

Team Management (45%)

  • Manage, coach, and thought-partner with your sub-team leads, through regular check-ins and Teach For America’s performance development cycle, to support their development, experience, and goal attainment, and the progress and experience of their sub-team members
  • Partner with, prioritize actions for, and support the Executive Director in cultivating, investing, and stewarding external leaders/partners (current and prospective) to expand the region’s involvement, influence, and impact. 
  • Oversee the operational systems, including data integrity, required to manage a high volume of school partners and alumni, to ensure a high-quality experience, efficiency, and effectiveness

Vision and Strategy (40%)

  • Create the long–term vision and annual strategic and operating plans for our presence, connectivity, and engagement across our local alumni and school and district partner networks, as well as the community organizations, political leaders, and advocates who influence the Los Angeles public education ecosystem. 
  • Regularly monitor data and progress, and, when needed, effectively and efficiently course-correct for performance metrics related across all workstreams

Lead across the region as a member of Los Angeles team (15%)

  • Serve as a member of the Regional Advisory Team, our region’s leadership team, to collaborate on and oversee overarching regional strategy
  • Participate in regional and organization-wide initiatives including, but not limited to, corps member interviews, staff learning and development, corps member confirmation, and other regional priorities

THE MUST HAVES

Prior Experience

  • 8+ years of outreach/constituent management experience strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of management required (7+ preferred), with experience managing laterally and through layers
  • Previous Teach For America staff or corps experience preferred
  • Proficiency with MS Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Google docs required
  • Experience with Salesforce (or other Constituent Relationship Management tool) preferred
  • Experience working cross-functionally to support the greater team or organization in achieving ambitious outcomes
  • Highly organized with proven time management skills and experience creating efficient systems to juggle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Motivated by deepening and broadening champions for Teach For America
  • Exceptional personal responsibility for meeting goals and a track record of success
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Exceptionally detail-oriented
  • Possesses a spirit of flexibility, a positive outlook and a strong customer service ethic

Work Demands

  • Ability to travel to event locations across the greater Los Angeles area
  • Some weekend and evening work required

The Teach For America Los Angeles External Affairs Team is dedicated to engaging external constituents including alumni and partners in schools and communities. We are responsible for partnering with schools and districts as a talent pipeline, and engaging alumni to ensure that we are a critical part of the local education ecosystem. In pursuit of our goals, we develop strong, inspiring relationships with schools, community partners, alumni, and policymakers to seek to raise the profile of our leaders and narrative to ensure Angelenos in a variety of sectors are activated in pursuit of educational equity.
