Background for this project:

For Room to Read, our focus is ensuring all children receive a solid start in literacy, learning and the joy of reading.  As laid out in Room to Read’s strategic plan, Vision 2025: Ending the Impossible, we are seeking impactful opportunities to support the literacy development of children in low-income communities. Our work supports teachers and educators through systematic training, teacher support and coaching.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Room to Read’s teacher training and support have been affected, forcing our staff to conduct virtual teacher support, coaching, and training. To support this new way of training, the team in Tanzania developed self-learning materials (SLMs) that teachers can use for refresher training. With the challenges of reaching teachers for support and training being universal across our project regions, we want the SLMs to be reviewed, standardized, and expanded for use across the globe. We also envision that these simply written modules could be complementary for trainings and teacher support when the COVID-19 situation normalizes.

Self-learning modules align with our belief in developing Lifelong Learners, as articulated in Room to Reads Vision 2025. The SLMs have potential to influence system-level change in all countries where we work through continuous teacher professional development of teachers and educators.
