About Zone 126

Zone 126’s mission is to ensure every child currently living in public housing has the education and skills needed to graduate from high school prepared for college or the workforce and enters the 21st century equipped with the tools needed to thrive. Zone 126 is located in Astoria and Long Island City, Queens. Zone 126 works with three specific zip codes that are associated with a NYCHA (New York City Housing Authority) housing developments (11101-Queensbridge Houses, 11102-Astoria Houses, and 11106-Ravenswood Houses).

Zone 126 coordinates partnerships with local and national service providers to serve children from birth (cradle) to entry into the workforce (career). Through our partnerships the Zone collaboratively offers a myriad of services that include early childhood, literacy, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), mental health, career exploration, and college counseling and other needed support services.

Community School Director

Zone 126 is seeking a committed and energetic Community School Director (CSD) to join the organization at PS 171Q. The ideal candidate is a passionate, committed, and ambitious, and will lead school transformation, working closely with the Principal. The CSD’s functions will utilize a holistic approach to:

A.   Coordinate Program & Service (3-K through 5th grade before, during and after school and summer programming to ensure students’ needs are met)

B.    Drive an Increase of Attendance (analyzing data and utilizing it to make informed decisions to increase attendance. decrease chronic absenteeism, and decrease lateness)

C.    Increase Parent & Family Engagement (co-planning activities with the school’s Parent Coordinator to increase family involvement in school activities and student support)

D.   Build a positive school culture that is rooted in the Growth Mindset and Grit Theory

(supporting the school to embrace a social emotional mindset that meets students’ holistic needs)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·       Foster strong relationships and effective communication and collaboration with students, parents, school staff, partners, and Zone 126 colleagues

·       Conduct an annual needs assessment that includes reviewing school and student data and conducting focus groups with stakeholders

·       Work with school administration to develop and implement annual goals that are part of the school’s Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP) and grant goals

·       Collect school and evaluation data to support the Zone 126 longitudinal study

o   Analyze and utilize the data to effectively manage partner programs, and develop additional programming

·       Manage partnerships with peers at partner organizations to ensure programs are integrated and implemented to support the needs of the students/families and Community School grant goal attainment.

o   Help school administration to understand the importance of the Community School programs

o   Lead discussions with teachers whose classes host partner programs to align the classroom with Community School work

·       Do a monthly inventory of all Zone 126 equipment and items that are provided to students

o   Ensure all items are in working condition

o   Ensure items are in stock far in advance of events (ex: ordering items needed for Valentine’s day in the fall)

·       Enforce all program policies and procedures to ensure the safety of students and staff, and compliance with government agencies

·       Attend at least one professional development opportunity a month (i.e. either sought out or one that Zone 126 recommends)

·       Communicate in a professional manner (on time, and in standard English)

·       Provide a monthly qualitative and quantitative Success and Growth report for the site

·       Establish and lead the following teams to support the Community School strategy

o   Community School Team (monthly meeting to discuss programming, events and school culture)

o   Attendance Team Meeting (weekly meeting to discuss grade level attendance, chronically absent students, and individual strategies to support students)

·       Track various funding sources and the metrics to be collected to fulfill grant requirements

·       Perform other duties as assigned 

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements

·       Bachelor’s degree/Master’s degree preferred, with 2+ years of progressive experience in a management level position overseeing educational or youth development programming

·       Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues prevalent in underserved communities of color

·       Demonstrated record of meeting and exceeding goals and positively impacting children, families, and the community

·       Capacity to develop creative and innovative solutions to support students and families

·       Superior interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written

·       Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Outlook and Google)

Reporting Structure & Relationships: The Community School Director will report directly to the Executive Director but will have extensive working relationships with fellow CSD’s along with the Data & Evaluation Manager and the school Principal.

Work Location and Schedule: This job is located at PS 171Q, 14-14 29th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11102 (easily accessible by the N/W/F trains and/or Q69/Q100 bus line). This position is in- person five days a week with no opportunity to work remotely. The work schedule will be 7:30 am to 3:30 pm with evening or weekend time on occasion, with advanced notification.

Salary: The annual salary is $62,000 with a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, life insurance and 401K option

Please note that prior to employment offer the selected candidate must:

1.     Provide proof that they have received two-doses of the COVID-19 vaccine

2.     Commit to working fully in person within a school environment. A remote option is not available due to the nature of the work (All safety protocols are in place within the school environment, with additional protective gear provided by Zone 126)

3.     NYC DOE fingerprint approval (Zone 126 will pay for a candidate’s fingerprinting)
