Appellate Advocates is a nonprofit public defender organization, based in New York City, which for over 25 years has been providing superior representation of individuals convicted of criminal offenses in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island who cannot afford private counsel. Our attorneys, from a variety of diverse backgrounds, are experienced in criminal law and believe in a holistic, client-centered approach to vindicating every client's constitutional rights and working to overturn unjust convictions and sentences. While our main work is appeals, we also represent clients in Sex Offender Registration Act hearings, reinvestigate cases and file motions for post-conviction relief with a focus on ameliorating immigration consequences, and seek to vacate convictions for victims of sex trafficking.

Position Description:

We are hiring a full-time Controller to join our team. The Controller will have significant accounting experience and an in-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”) and payroll. Reporting directly to the Attorney-in-Charge, the Controller will be responsible for the overall recording and supervision of the General Ledger & Accounts Receivables and Payable systems, and will oversee contracts management, which includes timely billing and contract budget monitoring. The Controller will be expected to substantially assist our external accountant with the year-end audit process.

Responsibilities:

• Ensure accurate and timely entry creations in accordance with GAAP

• Oversee contracts management and improve financial management and reporting

• Lead the external year-end audit process

• Perform accurate and timely completion of all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts receivable and payable, and reconciliations

• Manage IRS Form 990 and NYS CHAR 500 filing, and other audits as needed

• Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements including supporting schedules

• Interface with Human Resources to manage new processes and payroll changes

• Develop, implement, document, and monitor internal controls, policies and procedures, and financials reporting to ensure GAAP compliance

• Troubleshoot and correct entries in all systems to ensure accurate financial reporting

• Make financial presentations directly to the Board of Directors on a regular basis

• Guide financial decision-making for the organization

Qualifications:

• B.A. in Accounting or relevant field; M.A. and/or J.D. not required

• At least 6 years of accounting experience, which include general ledger entries, reconciliation, payroll, tax filings, and audits

• At least 3 years of experience directly managing the accounting functions, preferably in a non- profit setting

• Experience with financial and accounting systems

• Solid knowledge of GAAP; familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, etc.)

• Detail-oriented, able to handle competing tasks, and adept at communication

• Demonstrated ability to handle confidential situations

• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross-functional colleagues

• Experience with New York City and New York State contracting (invoicing and billing) preferred

• Experience with grant writing preferred

Salary and Benefits:
