Staten Island Legal Services (across the street from the ferry), seeks a Director of Grants and Contract Management.

STATEN ISLAND LEGAL SERVICES (SILS) is part of Legal Services NYC (LSNYC), the largest provider of free civil legal services for low-income people in the country. We provide high-quality, innovative representation to address the pressing legal needs of Staten Island’s diverse low-income populations. Our office is dedicated to providing high-quality legal services to the Staten Island community by preserving affordable and decent housing, representing survivors of domestic violence, obtaining immigration status and preventing deportations, advocating for the LGBTQ community, preventing foreclosures, advocating for students with educational needs and obtaining benefits. We work in partnership with community-based organizations in the communities we serve. 

The Opportunity and Responsibilities 

The Director will be primary responsible for managing a wide range of grants and contracts across diverse practice areas with different city, state and federal funders and agencies. The Director will report to the Project Director, and work in collaboration with the Director of Administration, and the Borough Budget Manager, to support the office and mission as follows: 

• Provide development support to the program, including identifying and applying for new sources of funding; 

• Assist in the preparation of grants proposals and responding to RFPs; 

• Reviewing contracts and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of contract requirements to ensure program’s compliance; 

• Tracking practice area-specific progress toward grant deliverables;

• Working with managers and staff to develop forms for data collection and strategies for reporting; 

• Communicating with unit managers and staff about grant/contract-related needs and deadlines, including grant close-outs;

• Work closely with unit managers to develop systems to track contract goals and requirements, identify problems and propose solutions to ensure contract goals and organizational needs are met.

• Reviewing, monitoring, and analyzing reports from LSNYC Central Grants & Contracts staff and Borough Budget Manager;

• Provide training to new staff on proper use of case management system to ensure proper timekeeping and tracking of contract deliverables;

• Preparing statistical and narrative grant reports based on funders reporting cycle; 

• Work closely with the Director of Administration to review and complete case cleanup reports and assist with client eligibility verification, including income waiver requests;  

• Work closely with Budget Manager and the Director of Administration with the preparation of budgets, reviewing and approving expenditures, and supporting the general operations of the office.

• Work closely with finance and Budget Manager to monitor spending on grants to ensure proper spenddown of contract funds.

• Help prepare and participate in grant-specific and program-wide audits and funder site visits; 

• Communicating with funder agency/program staff, as needed; 

• Coordinating administrative activities and tasks related to our grant obligations; 

Experience and Qualifications 

• Advanced Degree or Master’s Degree such as MBA, MPA, JD, or MSW (preferred);

• Minimum four (4) years relevant experience, at least some of which in a non-profit environment, preferably at an organization providing direct services; 

• Experience preparing RFPs, statistical and narrative grant reports, and experience working with accounting staff developing financial budgets, statements and proposal (preferred)

• Strong commitment to social justice, interest and experience working with and supporting 

diverse, low-income communities;

• Strong understanding of and experience with advocating for civil legal service provision 

for low-income communities;

• Experience with compliance, contracts and grants management;

• Experience obtaining and managing city, state, and federal funding, included through web-based funder portals;

• Experience producing development materials;

• Excellent written and oral communication skills; 

• Proficient in the entire MS Office suite including Excel, Word, Power Point and 

Publisher, with the ability to learn additional software; 

• Intermediate knowledge of Adobe Pro;

• Experience with Legal Server or other case and grant management systems (preferred);

• Strong organizational skills and detail oriented;

• Strong problem-solving skills and good judgment;

• Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and able to meet deadlines;

• Strong interpersonal skills;

• Collaborative team player and works well independently; and

• Supervisory experience or project management experience (preferred).
