Background

The Office of Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is taking responsibility to ensure Morale, Wellness, and Recreation (MWR) activities and legal services for Afghan guests currently residing in Liberty Village, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. The guests represent a diverse group of Afghans, from sophisticated city-based fluent English speakers to rural people with limited exposure to other cultures. Through the provision of these activities, USCCB aims to promote dignity and resilience-building capacities among the Afghan guest community.

Role

Supports the Volunteer Services Officer in scheduling and managing MWR and legal services volunteers from across several recruitment streams:  volunteers from the local community off the base, including the local Afghan community, local community on the base, guests, and legal experts. Ensure a productive and fulfilling experience for the volunteer as well as their ability to contribute to the services provided to guests. 

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for weekly scheduling of current volunteers, and onboarding and training of new volunteer staff, welcoming volunteers at the visitor center as needed, and providing an overview of the current state of operations. They would also be responsible to coordinate with the Operations Manager and NGO liaison and others to provide and facilitate lodging and transportation for volunteers as appropriate.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Works with Volunteer Services Officer, Guest Volunteer Coordinator, Operations Manager and staffing coordinators (IRC) to ensure adequate personnel (volunteers, staff and interpreters) to carry out activities
  • Coordinates with Volunteer Services Officer, Program Managers (MWR and Legal), and Activity Coordinators to provide broad orientation and training (including materials) to volunteers to ensure they are prepared for the work environment and to take on their responsibilities
  • Ensures that individual volunteers are grounded in the work, well oriented, acquainted with the skills needed
  • Encourages and thanks volunteers for their contributions
  • Updates program website and volunteer orientation materials as needed
  • Coordinates activities with other Volunteer Services staff working at other USCCB bases as appropriate
  • Ensures volunteer program feeds into overall program development (e.g., changing or expanding services, etc.)
  • Provides assistance with other duties as assigned by supervisor

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Experience with volunteer recruitment and management systems strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with refugee resettlement, immigrant services preferred
  • Experience with training or facilitation preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; embraces teamwork
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong problem solving and organization skills
  • Strong computer skills
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in a complex and dynamic work environment
  • Commitment to serve vulnerable populations

This position is an important part of a highly committed USCCB/Fort Dix Team that works long hours (10-12 hour days) 6 days per week, often under circumstances that are fast-paced, stressful, indoors as well as outdoors, and rapidly changing. It is a challenging work environment but will be deeply enriching and highly rewarding for the right person.
