Position Summary

The Director of Development, Events & Special Projects role reports to the Senior Director of Development for Psychiatry and the Executive Director of Development for Cardiology, Surgery, Ob/Gyn and Diabetes. As a critical member of these two teams, the incumbent will work on projects and staff areas that enhance visibility and philanthropic support of the assigned departments and other priority initiatives at CUIMC. The incumbent’s responsibilities include: working closely with key stakeholders, including event committees and faculty in regards to fundraising events, managing and expanding annual fund initiatives (gifts up to $100K) with direct mail and special projects, and working closely with supervisors on various fundraising activities. One of the primary foci of the role will be to work closely with the VPS OOD Special Events team and lay committees to oversee the production and management of assigned special events, including the planning of an annual large fundraising luncheon for Psychiatry, annual psychiatry stewardship events, the Cardiology Innovation Series, Wine and Gyn events, professorship celebrations, donor cultivation events, events related to prizes and awards, board meetings, and the coordination of stewardship initiatives.

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Development and the Executive Director of Development, the incumbent will serve as one of the internal and external liaisons to faculty and their leadership, advisory boards and other volunteer groups. In addition to managing development-focused events and related marketing materials that engage, cultivate and upgrade donors, the incumbent will help manage the Psychiatry annual fund, a source of support and pipeline for major gift prospects. The incumbent will lead the effort to expand annual fund initiatives such as cultivation events, direct mail/e-solicitations, newsletters and informational brochures, and special appeals. The incumbent will assist in the development of a communications strategy including the creation of collateral materials, and coordination of stewardship initiatives for donors. The incumbent will manage a portfolio of prospects as assigned. The incumbent will provide support to senior development staff on special projects with a primary focus on activities that will cultivate and steward relationships leading to major gift prospects. Responsibilities

1. Oversee the production and management of assigned special events, including the planning of an annual fundraising luncheon, the Cardiology Innovation Series, Wine and Gyn events, professorship celebrations, donor cultivation events, events related to prizes and awards, board meetings, and the coordination of stewardship initiatives, while serving as both internal and external liaison to faculty and their leadership, advisory boards and other volunteer groups. 60%

2. Staff supervisors on high-level major gifts prospects, including the development of briefings, strategy documents, proposals, prep and follow-up materials and contact reports. Manage a portfolio of prospects as assigned. 20%

3. Manage and seek to expand all annual fund initiatives such as direct mail, newsletters and informational brochures, e-solicitations, special appeals; annual fund donor cultivation and stewardship activities, and other duties as assigned. 20%


Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • At least four years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising or a related field, with experience in communications, special events and marketing.


Other Requirements

  • Excellent written and oral skills plus interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of management information systems and software programs such as Microsoft Office and the integration of such programs with other donor based gift records and systems.
  • Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor with a high degree of sophistication.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
  • Ability to work with a variety of constituencies, including donors, faculty, volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to maintain a high-level of confidentiality and working relationships with others.
  • Excellent ability to set priorities and perform under pressure of fast paced office environment.
  • Frequent local travel, as permitted, primarily within NY/NJ/CT.
  • This position requires work beyond regular hours, including evenings and weekends, as projects and events require.
