Salary:                                          £31,694 (pro-rata £18,593 - £25,355) - €37,519 (pro-rata €22,012 - €30,015)

Contract:                                      Fixed Term Contract - 12 months

Working hours:                          Part time (22 to 30 hours a week)

Location:                                      Based in the United Kingdom or The Netherlands

 

 

JOB SUMMARY

 

Under the supervision of the Head of Protection, the Programme Assistant will support the achievement of ARTICLE 19’s goals and smooth delivery of several global projects on the safety of journalists and human rights defenders. The Programme Assistant will contribute to the effective management of these projects through the provision of administrative and logistical support, helping to keep track of the various project commitments and deadlines. S/he will also contribute to the ongoing monitoring of developments related to freedom of expression and protection globally to inform ARTICLE 19’s protection communication strategy and international advocacy in the UN and other intergovernmental bodies as well as the development of future programming.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Under supervision of the Head of Protection, the Programme Assistant will have the following key responsibilities:

 

Project Implementation:

·      Supporting project management of specific projects, keeping track of key project commitments and requirements and communicating with project donors;

·      Providing administrative, financial and logistical support for the organisation and delivery of project activities, both online and offline;

·      Maintaining financial records of project expenditure and ensuring all expenditure is logged with the finance department;

·      Supporting the management of and communications with ARTICLE 19 external consultants, including by providing administrative support with procurement.

·      Assisting with the monitoring of project implementation and budgets, including payment requests;

·      Contributing to internal and external narrative reporting processes, including providing support in drafting activity and financial reports.

 

Communications and advocacy:

·      Monitoring the situation with regards to freedom of expression and the safety of journalists and human rights defenders globally;

·      Contributing to the conceptualization, planning, organization and delivery of advocacy activities, including side-events, trainings, workshops, consultations, and advocacy missions;

·      Assisting with on-going or ad-hoc campaigns and advocacy through researching, drafting, editing and proofing statements and letters, and contributing to the development of other communications outputs as needed;

·      Supporting the production of reports or other publications, including coordinating translations, editing and design;

·      Supporting ARTICLE 19 external communications, including updating project specific websites, utilising social media to draw attention to ARTICLE 19’s work and ensuring donor visibility requirements are adhered to in project outputs.

 

Other:

·      Identify new funding opportunities in relation to global, regional and country strategies as they pertain to the protection work, and support the development of funding proposals in cooperation with the fundraising team;

·      Other support to the Head of Protection, as required.

 

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

 

Education and Experience

·      Educated to degree level or equivalent;

·      Considerable work experience in human rights; preferably with experience on the safety of journalists and/or human rights defenders;

·      Experience in project management, including budgets and financial reports;

·      Experience in organising events, including trainings, workshops, advocacy missions and conferences;

·      Experience in supporting advocacy, communication and campaign activities;

·      Experience in supporting the development of fundraising proposals;

 

Skills and Abilities

·      Fluency in written and spoken English;

·      Knowledge of Dutch, French, Spanish and/or Portuguese is desirable;

·      Highly organised with the ability to multi-task, prioritise and complete activities under time pressure;

·      Excellent administrative skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail;

·      Ability to support research tasks, checking facts using a variety of sources, and with a keen eye for detail;

·      Good interpersonal skills and experience working and communicating with colleagues and partners in different locations;

·      Team spirit;

·      Self-motivation and the ability to work with little supervision;

 

Other requirements

·      Willingness and availability for occasional travel (no more than 10% of time);

·      Ability to work in a multi-cultural work environment and commitment to equal opportunities and non-discrimination.

·      Must have the right to work in the UK/Netherlands

·      Commitment to the aims and objectives of ARTICLE 19 and a human-rights-based approach



The role can be based in the United Kingdom or The Netherlands.
