OVERVIEW

Breakthrough Greater Boston (BTGB) inspires excitement for learning, creates paths to college, and promotes careers in education.

Founded in 1992 by MacArthur Genius Awardee Dr. Angela Duckworth, BTGB is a unique organization with a dual mission to 1) prepare low-income students for success in college and 2) train college students to become the next generation of urban teachers. Through six years of intensive, out of school time programming, Breakthrough changes students' academic trajectories and supports them along the path to college. Simultaneously, Breakthrough builds careers in education through an unparalleled teacher training program for college-aged students that features competitive national recruitment, research-based training, and daily coaching from master teachers.

We hire professional Instructional Coaches and School Counselors and host undergraduate and graduate interns, volunteers, and Program Fellows. More than 150 skilled volunteers per year support the needs of 550 students by serving as Academic Mentors and College Access Coaches.

After 20+ years of success in Cambridge, BTGB expanded to serve Boston and Somerville students, in 2013 and 2018, respectively. In Somerville, we will recruit and add a new cohort of 50 students each year until the campus serves as many as 300 students across six years of programming. Our growth will allow us to serve as many as 900 students and 200 teachers annually in three cities. In 2018, Breakthrough also launched a pilot of our College Transition and College Success Programs. The potential addition of College Transition and Success Programming in 2022 would mark the most significant programmatic expansion in organizational history by moving from six to as many as 10 years of programming to include the college years.

IMPACT

●    BTGB has consistently demonstrated that low-income students and students of color can achieve at the highest level when engaged in a culture of high expectations and provided the support necessary to advance academically. The 550 7th-12th grade students BTGB serve in 2020-2021 across its Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville campuses are particularly high need – 94% are of color, 82% are from low-income families, and 78% will be the first generation in their families to graduate from college.

●    BTGB’s program has delivered substantial results. Since our founding, BTGB has provided opportunities for over 2,500 students and teachers. In recent years, 94% of our graduating seniors have matriculated to college and 82% are persisting, putting Breakthrough students on a track to far exceed the national college graduation rate of 14% for low-income students.

●    Our Teacher Training Program also has a proven track record of inspiring careers in education. On average, 75% of alumni continue in the field of education. The effectiveness of BTGB’s program is also evidenced by survey results reflecting our constituents’ satisfaction with the program.
