We are currently seeking an ambitious intercultural enthusiast to join our Sponsored Programs Department on a temporary basis as the ALEX (American Leadership Experience) Program Coordinator from January 2022 through August 2022.
AFS-USA manages a number of U.S. government programs which provide scholarships for high school students to participate in international exchange programs, one of which is the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program www.yesprograms.org. The Sponsored Programs department at AFS focuses on maintaining relationships with the funder (the U.S. Department of State) and incorporating the programs into overall AFS programming. The ALEX Program Coordinator is a temporary position created to support a short-term exchange and leadership program for international students recruited for the 2020-21 academic year but unable to come to the U.S. due to the COVID pandemic. The Department of State has provided this special opportunity for students to spend two weeks in the U.S. either in April or July 2022. Students on the AFS-implemented ALEX program will be hosted in communities around the U.S. for one week and spend the second week in Washington, D.C. taking part in a leadership and civic education program.
Core responsibilities of the role include coordination of all planning, logistics and implementation of the ALEX program. More specifically this role will plan and implement three arrival waves of students (50-60 per wave) with one wave arriving in April 2022 and the other two in July 2022. This includes coordinating logistics and travel with our partner offices overseas and in the NY office, coordinating logistics with hotels in Washington, D.C. and across the country as students will stay in dorm/hotel or home-stay environment, and overseeing the week-long Washington, D.C. leadership program. The coordinator will oversee two assistants supporting logistics and implementation.

The coordinator role will work approximately 35 hours per week, typically 9:00am – 5:00pm, with the opportunity for additional hours during the execution of the program waves. Candidates must be available for the entire duration of the position – if you do not believe you can do so for any reason, please do not apply. Compensation: $20/hour, no benefits, non-negotiable. We welcome candidates located in New York City (preferred) to apply; however, U.S. remote is acceptable.
