JOB OVERVIEW

Over the last 10 years, Apex has grown exponentially, and is currently experiencing its most significant growth period to date. During this current fiscal year, we are growing our team of staff by 50%, investing more resources into our staff’s professional development, growing our programs and partnerships, and serving our highest number of youth ever.

Apex has a current operating budget of $3.5 million. The Development Department is responsible for raising approximately $4-5 million in FY 2022 and, with the Executive Director and Board, will determine increased income goals for the next three years.

The Director of Development will work with the Executive Director and the Development Committee of the Board to develop and execute a strategic and comprehensive plan to support operating and eventual capital needs of the organization. They will establish priorities and objectives; create fundraising strategies; identify current and prospective individual, corporate, foundation, and government prospects; develop, cultivate, and maintain long-term positive relations with board members, donors, and prospects; solicit major donors; and oversee fundraising events.

The successful candidate will have significant experience in these capacities, an excellent reputation with individual donors in the cultural sphere, strong management skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of and passion for education, youth empowerment, and Apex’s mission. A proven track record of meeting goals and expanding support, particularly in the individual giving and corporate arenas, is essential. The Director of Development must be a relationship builder, skilled in identifying prospects and donors, and gracefully moving them along the continuum of engagement.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, detail-oriented, possess a strong work ethic, and have the ability to adapt to changing circumstances in a highly collaborative environment. Unique to Apex is its fast-paced, nimble culture coupled with aspirational goals and objectives. The most successful team members are those who bring a creative, entrepreneurial, and high energy approach.

The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director and works closely with senior staff and the Development Committee of the Board. They will manage and build a development team of 2-3 members in FY 2022.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Annual Fundraising

  • Working closely with the Executive Director, the Director of Development will strategize and execute development initiatives for Apex’s programs and operations, including but not limited to: Individual Gifts, Grants, Corporate Sponsorship, Board Giving, and Special Events (primarily Spring Gala).
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director, senior staff, and Board to solicit and cultivate support.
  • Provide staff support to the Development Committee of the Board, and serve as a primary point of contact for the Board.
  • Oversee corporate, foundation, and government grant awards, cultivation, and stewardship.
  • Solicit and secure corporate sponsorships. Negotiate contracts and ensure successful delivery of benefits.

Individual Giving

  • Develop and propose strategies for solicitation of major gifts, and manage an effective program for recognition, involvement, and stewardship for individual donors.
  • Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects.

Special Events

  • Manage two large annual benefits, Spring Gala and Casino Night; transition the gala from one that is board-directed to staff-directed. 
  • Work with the Development Committee of the Board to identify other sources of event revenue (e.g., annual conference on Asian American hot button topics). Responsible for all donor events, including dinners and cultivation events, both in-person and virtual.

Management & Administration

  • Lead and advocate for a team of 2-3. Provide effective staff development, mentorship, and establish clear, accountable departmental priorities designed to achieve successful results.
  • Prepare and monitor the departmental budget, generate accurate monthly and quarterly revenue reports, and work closely with the Executive Director and Finance Committee of the Board to create analysis for Board review. 
  • Maintain and/or create advancement policies and procedures; ensure data collection and integrity of all donor information, gifts, pledges, and files; and ensure accurate acknowledgment of all gifts and grants.

Board Relations

  • Work closely with Development and Finance Board Committees and work with board membership to identify prospective donors.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated success leading advancement efforts for an educational/youth empowerment/direct service nonprofit or for-profit entity focused on educational tools/platforms.
  • Proven leadership and management capabilities, ranging from creating and executing plans and achieving goals to a commitment to excellence in all fundraising activities.
  • A genuine passion for Apex’s mission and the ability to hold meaningful conversations and foster relationships with prospective donors, collectors, curators and others.
  • Demonstrated track record of achieving development targets of at least $4M+ annually.
  • Knowledge of the NY philanthropic and Asian American community as well as the broader national network.
  • Ability to create, manage, and present budgets.
  • Positive “can do” attitude, flexible, team-oriented, results-driven, detail-oriented, and shows initiative.
  • Superior oral, written, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • The ability and willingness to attend evening and weekend events on a regular basis and to travel, as required.

Paid Time Off: In the first year of employment, you will be eligible for 10 vacation days and 12 paid federal holidays observed by Apex for Youth. Additionally, Apex closes for one week over the winter holidays and one week during the Fourth of July. You are also entitled to 5 sick days per year and 3 personal days a year. Additional vacation days accrue according to years worked in the organization.
