Amazon Watch is a dynamic nonprofit organization working to protect the rainforest, advance the rights of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin, and demand corporate accountability to address the climate crisis. Amazon Watch is an organization that works in partnership and solidarity with Indigenous communities across the Amazon as part of the international climate justice movement. Many of our allies across the rainforest are currently facing and resisting climate change-related catastrophes, the onslaught of extreme government regimes, and the expansion of fossil fuels, mining and other extractive industries.

We are seeking a passionate professional to serve as our Communications Coordinator. This is a position with a variety of work across the Communications Team, often in collaboration with Program Team members. This is a full-time position based in our Oakland, CA headquarters.

  • Looking to work in advocacy settings and understand, or are willing to learn, the role the Global North plays in resource extraction in the Global South.

This role would require leading the following: 

  • Maintain strategic and collaborative communications calendar on Asana as determined with Communications team;
  • Develop and implement social media strategies and lead digital content creation in coordination with our Digital Organizer and Development and Partnership Specialist, including both longer-term efforts and rapid response opportunities; 
  • Coordinate digital community management efforts with Digital Organizer
  • Acquire evergreen assets and footage for projects on an ongoing basis
  • Coordinate digital archive and collaborate with staff on image and video requests; 
  • Coordinate translation of visual and/or audio materials as needed, including content from allies and Indigenous partners to amplify on-the-ground campaigns
  • Coordinate photo sourcing and support with copyediting of development materials (annual report, event publications, etc.) as determined with communications and development teams;
  • Occasionally create and/or edit material for publications, website, and emails in accordance with Amazon Watch style guides and as determined with Communications Team;
  • Support with media-related tasks including updating lists and sending our materials via Cision;
  • Coordinate volunteers for communications-related projects;
  • Monitor media coverage on core issues and campaign targets for social media; 
  • Occasionally provide general support and assist communications department with special projects.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Minimum three years experience in journalism, public relations, online campaigning, or related communications field;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills;
  • Ability to draft documents under tight deadlines;
  • Solid copy-editing skills, strong attention to detail;
  • Online engagement experience; experience using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and ongoing interest in staying abreast cutting edge digital platforms;
  • Familiarity with Google Drive/Google Photos and other online file-sharing programs;
  • Effective team player with the ability to work and think independently;
  • Good organizational skills, demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and creativity; balance of left and right, brain and heart;
  • Desire to work with indigenous and affected communities and personal passion for our mission;
  • Spanish and/or Portuguese language proficiency.

Desirable skills:

  • Working knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign;
  • FinalCut/Adobe Premiere editing skills;
  • Multimedia and website management skills.

We are open to candidates that might not have formal communications experience but have relevant movement, program, or organizing experience, are enthusiastic about learning communications, and are open to mentorship.
