Position Description: Director of Religious Exploration

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Saratoga Springs

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Saratoga Springs (known as UU Saratoga or UUCSS) was founded by a group of people in the Saratoga area who were passionate about liberal religion. Since it began in 1996 it joined the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations in 1998, acquired a building of its own and grown in membership to 120 adults. The pandemic has taken a toll on our engagement of our families, and we seek a part time (up to 15 hours a week) Director of Family Faith Formation to oversee and implement an engaging religious education program to welcome, nurture and support families in living our Unitarian Universalist faith and values.

Unitarian Universalism, A Liberal Faith Tradition

Unitarian Universalism is a liberal faith tradition with historical roots in liberal Protestant Christianty.  As a living faith we seek the spirit of life and truth in the world’s religions as well as in science, in nature, and in ourselves.  We love creativity and imagination and asking questions. We celebrate the gifts of difference and diversity as well as the ways we are all the same. We commit ourselves to love and to justice and to each other.  We commit ourselves to mutual liberation and thriving in our challenging world.

Director of Family Faith Formation

The Director of Family Faith Formation oversees the implementation of the congregation’s goals through stories, curricula, service, events, and fun. These goals include supporting the congregation’s vision of fostering an antiracist, multiracial, multicultural, multigenerational congregation, and supporting parents and caretakers as the primary guides in the faith formation of their children.

Our Vision

We seek a candidate who can help us re-envision our current faith formation program.  Our main goal is to provide an environment where children, youth and parents/caretakers can form lasting connections with each other and develop spiritual practices to help them navigate the challenges of today’s world.  For their first 5 months, our new Family Faith Formation Director will be offered mentoring from our consultant, who has 15 years of professional experience in Unitarian Universalist faith formation and family ministry. This is an hourly, part-time position (up to 15 hours per week) that reports to the Minister. The schedule is flexible, but requires availability and attendance of 3 Sunday mornings per month.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in education, teaching, child, and youth services, and/or religious education and faith formation
  • A college degree or certification or equivalent experience, preferably in education, religion, or human services.
  • Strong leadership and teambuilding skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent computer and information management skills.
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn Unitarian Universalist (UU) curricula.

PERSONAL QUALITIES

We imagine that our Program Coordinator of Religious Exploration would be:

  • Compassionate, creative, community-minded and good at building relationships, welcoming, outgoing, organized
  • Given that emerging a Religious Exploration program from a pandemic is entirely new, the Program Coordinator would be flexible and adaptable as well as bold and willing to try new things.
  • a passionate advocate for children, youth, and their families

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Accept and maintain responsibility for all aspects of year-round faith formation programming for children in preschool through 8th grade and a nursery for toddlers and infants.
  • Implement the Soul Matters curriculum or appropriate substitute curriculum for school aged children.
  • Ensure accessibility of classes and programs, to all children, youth, and volunteers.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise and effectively schedule childcare providers, Religious Exploration guides, and volunteers. This includes performing background checks as may be required.
  • Plan family and multigenerational events in cooperation with the minister, the Religious Exploration Team, and volunteers.
  • Communicate regularly with families and the congregation
  • Learn to use our Breeze database to track program participants’ attendance, manage registration, and keep current records.
  • Stewardship of the Religious Exploration budget
  • Meet weekly, or as needed, with the Minister and attend staff meetings.
  • Attend religious education conferences, retreats, and workshops (as possible)
  • Pursue opportunities for continued education and professional development.
  • Abide by UUA Safe Congregations Code of Ethics and the Liberal Religious Educators Association (LREDA) Code of Professional Practices.
