House Rabbit Society (HRS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to improve domestic rabbit lives by elevating their living standards, quality of care, and legal status as indoor animal companions through education, rescue, and awareness. Our headquarters is located in Richmond, CA.

Rabbits are social, intelligent, individual beings. Through our website at www.rabbit.org, we share our philosophy that all domestic rabbits are worthy of the same quality of care as dogs and cats and that the safest place for domestic rabbits is indoors, as part of the family.

About the Role

The Executive Director is responsible for all operational and administrative functions of HRS, which has local, national, and international programs. This individual provides oversight for a broad assortment of organizational initiatives and is responsible for implementation of the strategic plan. As the public face of HRS to members, funders, and the general public, the Executive Director is responsible for the management and development of a dedicated team of staff members and volunteers. This person will ensure that fundraising objectives are met and that community outreach efforts are both in alignment with and guiding the organization’s mission.

Position Details

This position is located at House Rabbit Society’s headquarters in Richmond, California, with the possibility of remote work. If working offsite, there would be periodic travel to Richmond (in the Bay Area). Travel to conferences and out-of-state chapters would be required.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Management

• Provide leadership and strategies for organization, program excellence, financial planning, communication and fundraising with the Board of Directors and staff.
• Support Board and staff in executing the strategic plan.
• Oversee the effective day-to-day operations of HRS headquarters and international programs.

Board Relations

• Establish and maintain productive working relationships with the Board of Directors, to include budget development, progress reports, program development and strategic planning.

Programs, Development, & Communications

• Manage existing and develop new programs to support organizational priorities.
• Create new opportunities and new partnerships with individuals, businesses, and organizations while enhancing existing donor relationships.
• Develop and implement marketing and communications strategies to create a strong HRS brand.

Finance

• Develop, manage, and execute fiscal responsibilities to include budgetary, auditing, tax, legal, and reporting obligations.

Human Resources & Administration

• Working with an external vendor, direct Human Resources practices to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
• Oversee recruitment, orientation training, supervision, and ongoing professional development of a diverse body of staff and volunteers.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with at least five years of relevant nonprofit leadership and experience in the animal welfare sector.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and develop teams.
• Documented experience with fundraising.
• Passionate about working for and with rabbits.
• Ability to positively interact and build networks with staff and volunteers.
• Ability to set and achieve strategic objectives and manage a $500,000+ annual budget.
• Strong public speaking skills.
