Los Angeles Director

The Young Women’s Freedom Center (YWFC) is hiring for a Director level position to lead our work in building YWFC Los Angeles.  The Director of YWFC Los Angeles is a part of the Sr. Leadership team, working to lead work in the county to end the criminalization and incarceration of young women and trans youth of all genders, and to support the leadership of directly impacted young people to lead the work.

About the Young Women’s Freedom Center:

For 28 years, The Young Women’s Freedom Center (YWFC) has been investing in the leadership of young women and trans youth of all genders that have experienced poverty, life on the streets, incarceration and foster care involvement, and high levels of violence in their lives.  YWFC provides leadership, economic, and transformative opportunities for these young people and works with them overtime to find their voice and build personal and collective power to transform the policies and systems that criminalize poor young women of color through advocacy, organizing, systems change, and policy work. 


Position Overview:

The Director of YWFC Los Angeles works as a member of the Sr. Leadership team to ensure YWFC programs and campaigns are executed based on YWFC’s model and local political climate.  They manage staff members,  contract deliverables, and build and maintain critical partnerships in the community, with key stakeholders and with funders.  As an organizational leader, they are required to represent the organization publicly and lift up the leadership of other members of the team to do the same.  The Director also works with other members of the statewide team and the Policy and Research Departments to connect the local work on the ground to YWFC’s research and policy priorities. 


Key Duties

  • Full management and oversight of YWFC Los Angeles including contracts, key relationships, staffing, facilities, relationships with sub-tenants,  and general operations
  • Provide supervision, leadership support, and mentorship to staff and team members ensuring the development and support of directly impacted team members and youth leadership
  • Ensure execution and compliance with all contracts and funding agreements
  • Participation and leadership in organizational planning 
  • Ensure the day to day operations and facilities management including safety,  employment regulations,  good working conditions, and maintaining relationships with vendors
  • Maintain YWFC culture at site including the implementation of site-based practices at the site to promote team building and staff are celebrated (staff retention), ensure wellness of staff, investment in staff development, building a site that works together
  • Work under the direction of the Executive Director and as a member of the YWFC Leadership team to collaborate, support org-wide initiatives, ensure local work is a part of a larger coordinated strategy
  • Represent YWFC with funders, at public-facing events, etc. as requested by the Executive Director


Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Over 3 years experience in management of people, programs, and initiatives required
  • Advanced skills in Google suites, CRM tools, Microsoft office, and general tech platforms
  • Understanding of best practices and experience in building inclusive and engaged workplaces; cultural awareness and sensitivity with lens on racial and gender equity; experience supporting a multi-generation workforce
  • Capacity to build trust and establish rapport as both a leader and colleague, and an ability to facilitate difficult conversations and to provide and receive feedback
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at listening and responding with empathy in a diverse environment, building consensus, and managing conflict
  • Willingness and ability to grow professionally, be accountable, and to expand skills and adapt to evolving organization environments and constantly changing circumstances
  • Ability to maintain strong and appropriate boundaries with personal identifying information when interacting with program participants or community or program partners
  • Experience working with low-income communities, youth, formerly incarcerated, system involved, and young people that have lived and worked on the streets is required
  • Ability to direct staff through a process that builds alignment and trust, and minimizes harm and hurt, especially on high-stakes organizational decisions or moments of extreme tension. A calming force that helps reduce and avoid unnecessary conflict, while preventing and addressing issues from escalation
  • Extraordinary emotional intelligence and interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact with a wide range of audiences on complex issues.
  • Experience in grassroots organizing, campaigns, and or movement work desired 


Compensation

The targeted total compensation range is $90,000-110,000 for this position depending on experience level and location. In addition, YWFC offers a comprehensive benefits package for full-time staff that includes fully paid health insurance (medical, dental, and vision), 10 days of paid time off, ten paid holidays, and two-weeks off in December.  Additionally, YWFC prioritizes professional development for all staff and strives to offer flexibility for working parents and caregivers.
