Supervising Attorney- Criminal Defense Immigration Team

Job Description

The Legal Aid Society’s Immigration Law Unit is seeking a Supervising Attorney to join the citywide Immigration Law Unit to supervise the Criminal Immigration Specialist team, who work with staff in both the Civil Practice Immigration Law Unit and the Criminal Defense Practice offices to enhance legal services to non-citizen clients of the Criminal Defense Practice. The Supervising Attorney will be involved in day-to-day operations and will work closely with the Attorney-in-Charge, the Deputy Attorneys-in-Charge, and other Supervising Attorneys to train, supervise, and mentor staff. The Supervising Attorney will participate in Practice-wide management discussions and decision making.


The Unit is a recognized leader in the delivery of high-quality legal services to immigrants in New York City and surrounding counties. The Unit provides low-income New Yorkers with free comprehensive immigration services ranging from deportation defense to adjustment of status to Legal Permanent Residence and citizenship applications. The Unit specializes in the intersection between immigration and criminal law and works collaboratively with all practice areas to serve The Legal Aid Society’s diverse immigrant clients through a comprehensive service model. Unit staff represent immigrants before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), before immigration judges in removal proceedings, the Board of Immigration Appeals and in federal court on habeas corpus petitions and petitions for review, and on administrative and judicial appeals.



  • Directly supervise and mentor the Criminal Immigration (Padilla) Project, which belongs to both the Civil Practice Immigration Law Unit and the Criminal Defense Practice, and which currently consists of eight staff attorneys (when fully staffed)
  • Create Society-wide operational systems to ensure that defense attorneys are meeting their Padilla obligations
  • Collaborate with CDP attorneys, administrative staff and IT staff to make sure that case management system accurately reflects clients’ citizenship or immigration status
  • Keep abreast of developments in crim-imm law & policy and provide updates to staff
  • Assist in monitoring and maintaining a high standard of representation and client service
  • Maintain a reasonable caseload
  • Analyze legal issues, develop legal strategies and supervise the implementation of legal strategies in criminal court and in immigration removal defense
  • Foster and encourage teamwork and communication
  • Develop skills and knowledge of staff members
  • Assist with the development and implementation of programs
  • Assist with the funding for and reporting on programs
  • Respond to client, community and staff concerns
  • Other duties as assigned

Manhattan - Criminal Defense Practice Office



  • Minimum of five years’ experience in the intersection of immigration and New York criminal law
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the intersection of criminal and immigration laws
  • Interest in developing new approaches to representing clients with immigration issues in criminal court and in removal proceedings
  • Experience supervising and mentoring others
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Commitment to working in and valuing collaborative team models
  • Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not
