Descrição

Monterey Audubon Society seeks a highly organized, motivated, and collaborative Executive Director to lead the organization through an exciting period of growth. This person will be the organization’s first ED, and the ideal candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a team, as they will collaborate regularly with the Board and manage a part-time administrative staff person. In addition to raising funds to meet our mission and managing day to day operations, the Executive Director will serve as the public face of the organization.

The primary responsibilities for this position are as follows (but not limited to):

  • Fundraising and philanthropic support  40%
  • Environmental advocacy  30%
  • Program implementation and management  30%

Fundraising and philanthropic support

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to cultivate donors and expand community philanthropic support
  • Work with Development Committee to craft targeted campaigns for membership renewals, donor appeals, and project fundraising
  • Expand diversity and geographic reach of membership base
  • Manage membership and donor database
  • Plan seasonal member-only events to increase membership value
  • Identify and cultivate aligned grantors and foundations
  • Draft grant applications, and report to funders for grants secured

Environmental advocacy

  • Serve as the organization’s chief ambassador, conducting presentations, commenting at public meetings, and interfacing with the community 
  • Write and review public communications for website and social media
  • Stay up to date on regional and state issues that impact birds and wildlife by following proceedings of the Coastal Commission, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and municipalities of Monterey County
  • Write letters to agencies and legislators related to bird conservation issues
  • Maintain regular communications with other Audubon chapters and like-minded organizations

Program implementation and management

  • Manage development and publication of the annual report
  • Draft and report regularly on fiscal year budget
  • Collaborate with external bookkeeper and tax accountant to monitor and manage fiscal health of the organization
  • Plan and organize board meetings
  • Work with Board members to manage their volunteer efforts

Required Qualifications

  • Two or more years of nonprofit management experience, including fundraising
  • Experience with Little Green Light or similar donor database CRM
  • Project management experience in a team environment
  • Microsoft Office skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Ability to hike through varied terrain
  • Reside in/around the Monterey Bay area, and able to meet regularly with board members, donors, and attend events
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Successful completion of a background check before start date

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Four or more years of nonprofit executive experience managing a team
  • Basic knowledge of environmental regulations and land use policies
  • Familiarity and interest in birds and ecology
  • Spanish language writing and speaking proficiency
  • Experience in the field of environmental education

Compensation & Benefits

MAS offers a starting salary range of $75,000 - $85,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. MAS also offers a benefits package that includes a health care allowance and paid time off. This is an at-will position reporting to and collaborating closely with the Board of Directors.
