Background on PA United: PA United works to connect communities of color with white working-class communities in counties across Western PA around issues of equitable development with environmental protections, increasing the minimum wage, criminal justice reform, and support for workers organizing in unions. We organize with people by connecting issues with politics and building a multi-racial, working class movement for long-term change.

Job Description: We are seeking individuals who are passionate, enthusiastic, and committed to social justice, with experience knocking doors, operating virtual phone banks, having effective persuasion conversations, moving people to take action, and bringing together a team of people to achieve a set of goals. We are seeking a potential applicant with the flexibility and the capability to jump into an existing operation and hit the ground running. Previous experience as a canvass lead is beneficial but not required.

The Canvass Lead will report to PA United’s Deputy Canvass Director, and may supervise a Deputy Canvass Lead and a team of 10-20 field staff.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Canvass Lead will assist the Deputy Canvass Director and run the field program including door to door canvassing (when permitted) and a virtual phone bank operation
  • Recruit, manage, and support a team of paid canvassers to hit voter contact goals via door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, and peer-to-peer texting
  • Assist Canvass Director and lead training for paid staff and volunteers on personal story development, canvassing, and other voter contact tools
  • Providing canvassers with clear, quantitative goals, tracking progress and keeping team motivated to meet goals
  • Quality controlling canvasser data
  • Utilizing internal tracking systems in order to monitor workflow
  • Administrative duties, including onboarding and tracking canvasser hours
  • As part of the door-to-door canvass or phone banking , identify voters who are interested in participating in community organizing to create long-term change
  • Cutting turf

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Excellent communication and oratory skills
  • Commitment to understand race, class, gender, and other equity issues as part of your work as well as the impact these structural issues have on our collective work environment
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and challenge people to take risks in order to make change
  • Leadership skills
  • Experience leading a project, tracking and achieving multiple goals, and coordinating logistics with multiple team members
  • Basic computer and interpersonal skills
  • Collaborative and flexible
  • Punctual and highly motivated
  • Organized, disciplined, and detail-oriented
  • Previous canvass management experience, either paid or volunteer
  • Familiarity with Votebuilder/VAN software and Google Sheets
  • Ability to receive and integrate performance based feedback into ongoing work plans and the ability to provide relevant and timely feedback to peers in a constructive manner
  • Drivers License and use of a vehicle
  • Laptop and smartphone
  • A college degree or formal education is not required
  • Fully vaccinated for COVID-19 with a vaccine card

Other Information:

The work schedule includes regular evening and weekend work. Candidates requiring strictly a 9 to 5 schedule will not be a good fit for this position.

This is a full time position with a contract that covers until November 4th 2022. Salary is $42,000/year plus healthcare benefits. Paid sick days are included. A cell phone, travel stipend and campaign expense reimbursements will be provided.
