Who we are

The News Literacy Project (NLP), a national nonpartisan education nonprofit, is seeking a Civic Marketing Manager to join our media and marketing team. Founded in 2008, NLP is the leading provider of news literacy education for middle and high school students, primarily through its signature e-learning platform, Checkology®.

Where you fit in

NLP is poised for a greater presence to meet the intense interest in its programs from school districts and organizations across the country, as it works to build a national movement to advance the practice of news literacy in all sectors of American society. To reach our objectives, NLP is rapidly expanding its capacity. This is a great opportunity for you to inspire the public to practice news literacy skills.

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of the following:

·      Background in social cause marketing.

·      Ability to move people to take action.

·      Experience in leading marketing campaigns (particularly digital).

·      Knowledge of social media and how to reach different audiences on different platforms.

·      Familiarity and comfort with pursuing, building and managing partnerships.

·      Knowledge of how to use data to target and assess campaigns.

·      Detail-oriented project manager able to communicate across teams/divisions.

·      Strong writing skills and the ability to develop messaging that moves and persuades audiences.

·      Comfort with launching new websites and initiatives and building an audience for them.

·      Passion for promoting news literacy skills to the public.

We’re looking for someone who can have an immediate and meaningful impact on our work by generating interest from outside membership organizations and giving us the opportunity to connect with those members to teach them news literacy skills.

This position reports to the Senior Vice President of Media and Marketing (formerly Communications).

About the position

The Civic Marketing Manager (CMM) will be a community organizer of sorts, responsible for building and maintaining partnerships with membership organizations (such as senior, community, religious, union, veterans and other civic groups). This person should be comfortable developing messaging that will move organizations to work with us and inspire their members to learn news literacy skills. The CMM will also help manage digital/social media marketing campaigns to help reach our key target audiences and analyze the resulting data to determine next steps. The CMM will be a full-time contributing partner on the media and marketing team (formerly communications).

Specifically, in this job, you will:

·      Promote our work to the general public.

·      Contact membership organizations to build relationships with them and find opportunities for our staff to train their members to become news-literate.

·      Help manage partnerships with affinity and media organizations.

·      Create marketing campaigns (including messaging, targeting, and design) to spread awareness of news literacy and motivate different communities to become news-literate.

·      Write messaging, creative for ads and occasional content for our website.

·      Assist with special projects such as our upcoming civic engagement platform, National News Literacy Week, Changemaker Awards and more.

·      Work with NLP teams to assist in promoting their work (donor campaigns, new Checkology lessons, educator network events, etc.).

·      Be co-backup for social media manager when needed.

·      Perform other duties as assigned.

About you

In addition to the qualifications noted above, the successful candidate will have all or most of the following:

 ·      Bachelor’s degree.

·      Three to five years of relevant experience in marketing and/or community organizing.

·      Knowledge of digital marketing and emerging social media trends.

·      Relationships with civic organizations or the ability to build them.

·      Superior written and verbal communications skills, and the ability to translate jargon and technical education language into compelling copy.

·      Familiarity with AP style.

·      Ability to operate effectively under deadline pressure.

·      Spanish speaker is a plus.

·      Experience and comfort with working in a virtual work environment (in terms of both technology tools and personal skills).

·      Interest in the news media and its business models.

·      Knowledge of the state of misinformation today is a plus.

This position is largely virtual; ideally, the successful candidate will live in or near Washington, D.C., where NLP’s office and CEO are located. Other locations may be acceptable for a highly qualified candidate.
