The American Sociological Association (ASA) invites applications for the position of Director of Membership. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic membership professional to build on the positive momentum created by recent shifts to an anniversary-based membership year, email automation, and expanded membership benefits. ASA is the national professional society for sociologists, with members employed in the full range of academic institutions as well as in practice settings. Its mission is to serve sociologists in their work, advance sociology as a discipline and profession, and promote the contributions and use of sociology to society. ASA’s office is in Washington, D.C., but staff is working 100% remotely at present. The return to office work plan (tentatively to begin in January) includes a vaccination policy and flexibility for remote work part of the week.

Essential Functions:

  • Conceptualize, operationalize, and provide innovative and strategic direction for the association’s membership efforts, including recruitment, retention, and reclamation.
  • Establish systems for tracking, reporting, and acting upon membership metrics.
  • Direct customer service functions.
  • Direct all database functions to ensure accurate and secure data.
  • Oversee relevant website content.
  • Manage a significant departmental operating budget.
  • Liaise with relevant membership committees and task forces.
  • Serve as a member of the association’s senior leadership team and manage additional related responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the Deputy Director; Supervises two Membership Department staff members: Membership and Database Manager, and Membership Assistant.

Job Classification: Exempt

Preferred Qualifications: It is important to note that these qualifications are preferred.   • A bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in social science discipline welcome.
  • Significant relevant professional experience required; experience in a professional association with individual memberships optimal.
  • Experience working with association management systems and email automation required; experience with NOAH, Higher Logic, and Feathr a plus.
  • Strong marketing skills, including strategic planning for marketing funnels, use of marketing technologies, an eye for clean graphics, and an ear for concise and persuasive text.
  • Familiarity with the higher education sector.
  • Ability to work well independently and in collaboration with teams.
  • Demonstrated leadership, management, and administrative abilities.

Compensation: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. A full benefits package is provided to all ASA staff members.
