BIPOC FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Meridian Fellowship for Aspiring BIPOC Educators 

If you are interested in applying for this fellowship, please indicate your interest on your cover letter or resume.

In collaboration with Bertschi school, we are excited to move beyond conventional hiring and retention methods by supporting the professional growth of aspiring BIPOC educators by creating affirming spaces, and eliminating barriers to entering the profession. The Meridian Fellowship involves hiring an aspiring BIPOC educator into an Associate Faculty role. Additionally, the school will provide financial support for the educator to obtain a teaching certification degree at the University of Washington. Bertschi and Meridian are collaborating with UW faculty to support this candidate in their student teaching. Fellows will receive up to $10,000/ year scholarship for two years at the University of Washington's Elementary Teaching Program. If you are an aspiring BIPOC educator and are currently enrolled at UW's teaching program, or are interested in enrolling, please consider this opportunity.

Both schools are co-hosting an information session to discuss their Fellowships on Wednesday, May 4th on Bertschi's campus (with a virtual option via Zoom) from 6-8 pm. Please contact Yaneth Vrentas to learn more!

DESCRIPTIONS OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support students and teachers in the assigned grade-level 
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with students.
  • Supervise students in a variety of settings, including, but not limited to, the classroom, the School’s playground, and field trips.
  • Demonstrate best instructional practices to deliver a high-quality, developmentally appropriate curriculum to students.
  • In collaboration with classroom faculty, actively create and maintain a well-managed, positive classroom environment that supports student engagement and motivation.
  • Actively participate in faculty work aligned with the strategic plan.
  • Has a commitment to ongoing cultural competence professional development and has the motivation to put these skills into practice. 
  • Understand and support the school’s mission through professional conduct and actions which demonstrate the core values and philosophy of the organization.
  • Collaborate with teaching faculty to assess students, and design and deliver differentiated instruction to flexible groups of students.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Proficient technology skills and the knowledge and ability to integrate technology into the curriculum.
  • Attend overnight experiential learning trips and drive Meridian vehicles.
  • Excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to lift more than 50 pounds, interact with students, and move around the classroom.
