The Opportunity:  This is an opportunity for an experienced technical leader who truly lives the values of open-source collaboration. The ideal candidate for this role combines the expertise of a product owner, with the ability to leverage organizational partnerships and community outreach to secure resources to execute on technical innovation initiatives. Partner cultivation is key to this role's success, and this person will need to be highly capable at both identifying areas where resource investment can accelerate innovation, as well as pitching the value of that investment to leaders in the open source ecosystem. When successful, this person will be leading interdisciplinary teams of community contributors and sponsored developers, and tactically deploying funding to accelerate delivery of strategic initiatives for the broader Drupal project.

Overview of Drupal:  Drupal is an open-source, digital-experience enabling software with one of the world's largest independent, most pioneering open source communities supporting it. Drupal is used by ambitious businesses, governments and nonprofits throughout the world, with one in forty websites being built with Drupal globally, including major organizations like NASDAQ, Oxford University, the United Nations, and thousands more.

Overview of the Drupal Association:  At the Drupal Association, our vision is a web that is innovative, inclusive, and open.  We are a global, non-profit organization whose mission is to to drive innovation and adoption of Drupal as a high-impact digital public good, hand-in-hand with our open source community.  We share the values of our community, seeking to empower contributors,  promoting equity, inclusion, accessibility & justice, teaching and learning, relying on trust and accountability, and working with a great sense of gratitude.

Elements of the Role:

Partner cultivation - Success in open source requires collaboration across the boundaries of any single organization. This person must be able make the case to partner organizations to make significant investments in these technical initiatives. This requires:

  • Define technically accurate but concise 'asks' tailored to the partners that can best help us execute on particular initiatives.
  • Articulate the value of investment to partners who believe in the common cause of open source.
  • Deploy contribution credit and other benefits as incentives and rewards, in a fair and systematic way.
  • Collaboration with the Drupal Association partnership development team to cultivate prospective partners.

Technical project management - The person in this role must be able to earn community respect, and inspire individuals and organizations to execute on critical initiatives to advance specific technical initiatives in Drupal. Crucial skills include:

This role will not have formal management authority over these contributors. Therefore, this person must:

  • Be able to clearly define the roles and requirements being asked of each contributor.
  • Project manage contributors' efforts across teams and timezones.
  • Define milestones and estimate delivery timelines.

Communication - Because this role's success depends so much on community and partner activation, being able to communicate a strategic direction, the need for resources, and report on the success of the initiative will be crucial. This role should:

  • Prepare external communications to rally contributors and organizations around specific initiatives.
  • Write regular public progress reports and success stories as the initiatives are executed.

  • Ability to identify and recruit subject matter experts for key deliverables or to clear key blockers.
  • Project management and delivery on a wide range of tasks necessary to successful execution, including developing pitch decks, monitoring legal agreements with contributing companies, defining success metrics and quality standards, and following sound accounting practices.
