Position summary:

This position is responsible for implementing a comprehensive individual giving strategy in support of the Guttmacher Institute’s programs and mission. The person filling the position will oversee the day-to-day operations of the individual giving team; develop fundraising strategies for individual donors at all giving levels; identify, cultivate and solicit gifts from prospective donors; and undertake stewardship with current donors, with the aim of increasing support from individuals. Responsibilities include management of the day-to-day operations of the individual giving team, management of the annual fund, major gift fundraising, direct mail, e-philanthropy, events and planned giving. The position is responsible for supervising three staff members and overseeing work with vendors.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

●     Manage the day-to-day operations of the Individual Giving Team.

●     Work with the VP for Development to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy for the annual fund that includes major gifts, direct mail, online cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

●     Secure major gifts at the $10,000+ level.

●     Manage a portfolio of high-capacity prospects.

●     Schedule and attend meetings with current major donors, involving other staff members and Board members as appropriate.

●     Prepare written materials and proposals needed for specific solicitations, including regular direct response letters, e-mail appeals, and social media campaigns, with input from program staff.

●     Work with the VP for Development to develop a performance metrics plan for the Individual Giving Team

●     Work with the VP for Development to diversify the Guttmacher Institute’s individual donor base.

●     Oversee and manage individual donor data analysis, protocols, and reporting functions.

●     Manage and oversee the Institute’s Planned Giving program, including the Legacy Circle.

●     Oversee a robust prospect research program.

●     Oversee fundraising events (house parties, office fundraisers)

●     Attend select meetings, conferences and events that offer opportunities to meet and network with major donor prospects.

●     Manage vendor contracts and contracting processes.

●     Develop and manage annual fundraising budgets.

●     Stay abreast of key fundraising innovations and philanthropic trends and provide recommendations to the VP for Development and other members of the Executive Leadership Team. 

●     Perform any other job-related duties as assigned by Vice President for Development.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manage three employees and oversee work of vendors. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; providing mentorship and ensuring professional development and growth; appraising performance; and managing employee and vendor relations.


Qualifications:

●     Bachelor’s Degree required; Advanced degree preferred;

●     At least 7-10 years of fundraising experience including individual giving and face-to-face solicitations;

●     Management experience;

●     Proven track record of setting goals, management and reporting progress against those goals

●     Substantial experience with donor research, direct response, major gifts, planned giving, and managing and creating budgets;

●     Experience and comfort with e-philanthropy, including email and social media campaigns;

●     Familiarity with constituent relationship management software preferred;

●     Experience in Salesforce preferred;

●     Advanced skills in Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint;

●     Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, including an ability to distill complex, research-based information into compelling and concise fundraising messages;

●     Knowledge of and deep commitment to sexual and reproductive health and rights;

●     Ability to travel, mainly within the United States; and

●     Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in a workplace setting a plus.
