Background:

Based in East Harlem, two long-standing and well-regarded harm reduction organizations in New York Cityare seeking Harm Reduction Specialists. In the process of completing a merger, these nonprofits are innovative organizations serving low-income people who use drugs and other marginalized individuals. The wide range of mobile and center-based services are delivered by upwards of 80 staff and peer workers, and include syringe access, overdose prevention, public health, care coordination, medical care, holistic, peer education, and advocacy services.


Job Summary

The organization is seeking full and part-time Holistic Health Specialists to perform holistic health services including acupuncture, acupressure, and Reiki to people actively using drugs, including injection drug users(lDUs), sex workers, and people living with HIV/AIDS and/or Hepatitis C. Holistic Health Specialists work as part of a team alongside SEP/Supportive Services staff and other Holistic team members. These positions report directly to the Holistic Services Manager.

These positions are both office and street based. Some services are rendered from a street-based outreach mobile unit stationed in neighborhoods of high need. Individuals must be comfortable providing services on a mobile outreach unit and street outreach.


Position Description:

  • Provide auricular acupuncture to reduce stress and manage drug use
  • Provide holistic health counseling and complete referrals/ linkages to NYHRE/WHCP care coordination teams for medical and mental health services
  • Assist in providing education around harm reduction and holistic health services
  • Provide services including but not limited to National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) protocol/auricular acupuncture, acupressure, yoga, meditation, and/or meridian yoga therapy in the office and during street-side outreach events to people who use drugs 
  • Identify new locations and settings where people who use drugs ( PWUD) may be living, using, transacting; conduct outreach to these areas as needed Manage materials and supplies for outreach distribution               
  • Attend meetings and trainings as directed by supervisor
  • Facilitate wellness and stress reduction groups
  • Maintain and submit proper documentation of services provided


Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Must be certified as ADS- ACCUPUNCTURE DETOXIFICATION SPECIALIST
  • Must be organized, self-motivated, and committed to working in a diverse environment
  • Must be a team player and able to work effectively with a large variety of personalities and abilities, pragmatic with excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills Must be familiar with and believe in a harm reduction philosophy
  • Must be willing to work outdoors several hours per shift in various weather conditions; weekend and evening hours flexible to provide outreach services to high -risk populations that congregate during irregular hours
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work with diverse communities (multi-gender, -ethnic, -generation, -lingual, political) as well as enthusiasm working with individuals who are current substance users Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, and email correspondence Spanish fluency an asset but not required.
