The Literacy and Math Tutoring Initiative is a city-wide effort to improve literacy and math skills in students from all across New Haven. United Way and New Haven Reads (NHR) have been awarded the opportunity of supporting participating after school organizations that wish to provide the literacy tutoring to their children in a two-year initiative. NHR will help recruit tutors, provide literacy training to staff and tutors in a train the trainer model, and provide weekly support to those organizations through visits by the Literacy Instructors. There will also be community literacy events and book giveaways for children. The Literacy Tutoring Initiative will run throughout the city over a two-year period starting in June of 2023.
The Literacy Instructors (LI) will support staff and students at select participating after-school organizations in effectively implementing a specific literacy tutoring model at their site. The LI will assess students, ensure fidelity to the program and model instruction when needed. A pilot program in the summer of 2023 will enable NHR to offer training support to three or four after-school programs at up to 10 sites. The tutoring initiative will expand in the school year of 2023-24, enabling additional after-school programs to join this tutoring initiative. Literacy Instructors, under the direction of the Literacy Initiative Director, will visit each site weekly to support the staff of participating organizations, to ensure fidelity to the model, assess students, and review data. The Literacy Instructors will track data on students from participating organizations and input data into the NHR data management system (Salesforce).
