About Limitless Horizons Ixil

Limitless Horizons Ixil (LHI) is a non-religious, non-partisan Guatemala-based organization with legal status in Guatemala and 501(c)(3) status in the United States. LHI creates opportunities for the indigenous youth, women, and families of Chajul, Guatemala to develop the academic and professional skills needed to effect change in their lives and community.

LHI is in an exciting, transformative phase right now. We are opening a new school, Colegio Horizontes, to provide access to a high-quality, empowering, and holistic middle and high school education for indigenous youth in rural Guatemala. We will bring culturally responsive, rigorous, and engaging academics to Chajul for the first time, while opening doors for girls to thrive in school, along with a small group of boys. Led primarily by local indigenous women, our school will foster the skills youth need to effect change in their lives and community.

Our vision for Colegio Horizontes is a new generation of civic-minded youth who are academically prepared for university and well-paying careers, and who can bring economic security to their families without migrating to the U.S., breaking the cycle of poverty in Chajul. We will create a pipeline of educated agents of change to create solutions to local challenges. Our comprehensive approach will strengthen families, promote a culture of gender equality, and improve educational quality across the community, creating a positive ripple effect in Chajul for generations to come.

Guatemala Work & Housing Location

The Ixil region is isolated by beautiful mountains and has maintained its rich Maya Ixil traditions and language. Chajul, Nebaj, and Cotzal are the three counties that make up the Ixil region in the Department of Quiché in the western highlands of Guatemala. Limitless Horizons Ixil serves Chajul, which consists of an urban center (pop. 20,000) and many outlying rural villages (pop. 30,000). Having been at the heart of Guatemala’s 36-year civil war, Chajul experiences post-war challenges such as land displacement and fragmented families. Within the community, 93% of families live in poverty with 27% in extreme poverty. Limited educational opportunity remains a significant impediment to progress, with only 11% of youth in Chajul graduating from middle school.

While the Ixil region is a rewarding and beautiful place to live, it is not without its challenges. As is the case in much of the developing world, water quality is poor and illness is common. LHI works hard to maintain the health of its volunteers, providing water filters, as well as reimbursing travel insurance and maintaining a wide network of quality healthcare providers in the region and beyond. The ideal candidate will be understanding of these risks, eager to tackle the challenges of living in the developing world for the reward of participating in truly meaningful work.

More about the organization

LHI achieves its goals through the integration of its core programs:

  • The Youth Development Program has supported 226 middle and high schoolers since 2004 with financial scholarships, school supplies, and full wraparound services to help them succeed. The majority female program provides scholars with tuition, tutoring, computer classes, student and parent workshops, mentorship, and if needed, counselling. (This program is phasing out due to the start of our new school, Colegio Horizontes.)
  • The Emerging Leaders Program provides Youth Development Program alumni with ongoing support in their post-secondary transitions to university, employment, or entrepreneurship.
  • The Saber Sin Límites (Limitless Knowledge) Community Library serves nearly 500 active members in person when the library is open, while offering the entire community access to around 9,000 books and literacy programming, academic support, and other resources.
  • The Artisan Program provides women with the opportunity to earn a fair wage using their traditional weaving skills.
