The Black Educators Initiative - background

As a fundamental part of our mission at Urban Teachers, the Black Educators Initiative (BEI) aims to increase the number of Black teachers in Baltimore, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia while simultaneously ensuring they are supported and embraced. Urban Teachers received a $25 million grant from the Ballmer Group specifically designed to bring more Black teachers into our nation’s schools. Additionally, there is a specific focus on increasing the number of Black male teachers entering into and staying in the teaching profession long-term. $19 million is provided directly to Black participants in the form of grants and student loan forgiveness over the course of their programmatic commitment. Over five years, Urban Teachers aims to bring 880 Black teachers, including 260 Black male teachers, into the profession.
