Mass Audubon is seeking a dynamic, experienced Community Organizer to partner with the new Director of Legislative and Government Affairs to advance our ambitious agenda to protect the nature of Massachusetts.

Mass Audubon is dedicated to taking action to protect nature in Massachusetts through land conservation, on-the-ground restoration, world-class education programs that reach a quarter of a million people each year, and our policy and advocacy work. As such, we serve as a leader and a catalyst for conservation, by acting directly to protect nature, and by stimulating individual and institutional action through conservation, education, and advocacy.

In March 2021, Mass Audubon adopted its ambitious new Action Agenda, setting the direction and priorities for the organization over the next five years. We are seeking to add an experienced, strategic Community Organizer to our growing Policy and Advocacy team, which is working to implement strong public policies and programs that advance Action Agenda outcomes.

Reporting to the Director of Legislative and Government Affairs, the Community Organizer will play a vital role aiding Mass Audubon to build our political power and advance our policy goals. The Community Organizer will support all of our issue campaigns, including an active campaign seeking to direct $1 billion in public, private and philanthropic funds to climate and nature. By leading the effort to activate and engage Mass Audubon’s members, volunteers, visitors, and community partners, they will help us execute and win campaigns.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, organize, and staff a variety of campaign activities, from lobbying days to local events, strategic communications.
  • Develop an outreach strategy to establish and cultivate Mass Audubon’s presence in communities throughout Massachusetts, and support for Mass Audubon’s agenda among its membership.
  • Identify, recruit, and support volunteers and member leaders for our Climate Champions network.
  • Provide advocacy trainings to volunteers, members, and constituents.
  • Compose and review campaign and outreach materials including action alert emails, fact sheets, talking points, social media content, and other written materials as needed.
  • Develop up-to-date database of members, volunteers, visitors, residents, and community partners.
  • Cultivate and build meaningful networks, partners, and relationships to more effectively support communities of color and marginalized residents across the state.
  • Initiate and build strong relationships with a diverse range of people, including passionate members, nonprofit leaders, faith-based groups, municipal staff, and elected officials.
  • Collaborate with Policy and Advocacy Team to design and lead community and member engagement and outreach, including action alerts, event planning, and other campaign activities.
  • Develop metrics for, track progress and effectiveness of campaign activities, and help ensure implementation of ‘lessons learned’ to improve future advocacy campaigns.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in a field related to public policy (e.g., public policy, political science, economics, communications).
  • 6–8 years’ experience in issue-based organizing, including volunteer recruitment and management, organizing and leading community events, and building and maintaining strategic relationships and partnerships (e.g., with community-based organizations).
  • Experience and knowledge of the Massachusetts advocacy landscape, preferably from perspective of an NGO.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to motivate volunteers and partners essential.
  • A passion for nature, conservation and climate change, and a commitment to centering equity and inclusion.
  • A desire to engage in wide-ranging conversations with varying audiences and learn from communities and grassroots partners.
  • Strong public speaking, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. Track record as a self-starter, proven ability to juggle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work both independently and highly collaboratively within a team.
  • Experience in the area of environmental and energy policy, nature conservation, or climate advocacy desirable but not required.
  • Proficiency with standard office technology and software (MS Office Suite, Google Drive, etc.) required. Experience with advocacy software (e.g., Convio) preferred.
  • Possession of a Valid driver’s license.
