Overview of the Native Justice Coalition (NJC): The NJC is a grassroots, community based, and progressive Native-led coalition based in Anishinaabe Aki (Michigan). How we define being progressive is based in centering Native people in racial justice or harm reduction that has culturally sensitive supports for healing. Our work includes the following: annual Anishinaabe Racial Justice Conference, Anishinaabe Healing Stories Project on Racial Justice Program, Two-Spirit Program, MMIWG2S Program, Harm Reduction Program, Anishinaabe Racial Justice Coalition, and special projects. We work across our Native American and First Nations communities in the Great Lakes region. 

Job Overview: We are seeking a mission-driven, self-starter to work closely with the Executive Director in rural and remote Native American communities where NJC strives to make a positive impact. The ideal candidate must be organized, possess a demonstrated ability to follow through, and be adept at working on a team with diverse community partners.

Job Summary: The Development Coordinator is responsible for managing and implementing the organization’s fundraising strategy and development plan. Core responsibilities include developing new relationships with donors, maintain current donor relationships, successfully manage and execute grant applications, reporting, and coordinate fundraising efforts. An ideal candidate brings strong fundraising, grant writing, event planning, organizational, and interpersonal skills to the position. An ideal candidate is enthusiastic about growing the NJC through building new relationships with donors and philanthropic partners. This position reports to the Executive Director. The coordinator must be flexible in days and hours available for scheduled work.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develop, write, and review grant proposals (including related program budgets), letters of interest, and reports for current and prospective funders as per deadlines.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to help manage the process of cultivating, stewarding, and developing new relationships with institutional funders.
  • Assist in development of strategic and long-term fundraising goals.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and management of a multi-year, national fund development program that diversifies revenue through new funding sources.
  • Research grant, donor, and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Develop, promote, and track peer-to-peer campaigns.
  • Assist with donor communications and donor acknowledgments.
  • Create promotional materials for virtual and print fundraising campaigns.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • The ideal candidate must reside in Michigan at the time of starting the position. However, we are open to working remotely with someone who meets the required qualifications.
  • Excellent attention to detail, an unmistakable work ethic, as well as a keen eye for research and prospecting.
  • Knowledgeable of different grant portals and various submission processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven track record of strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong sense of integrity and experience managing confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively handle multiple competing projects focusing on deadlines and goals.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, commitment to positive relationship building, and creative diligence with the challenges of grant writing. 
  • Cultural awareness and humility; ability to build positive relationships with diverse people and communities. 

Education & Experience

  • Must have an Associate’s degree. Bachelor’s degree preferred. 
  • At least two years of experience working in Native American communities or in a field of work related to the organization, preferably in a non-profit environment.
  • At least one year of experience in grant writing, development management, and fundraising preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
