The Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) is looking for a Chief of Staff, President’s Office (CoS) for their Washington, D.C. headquarters. FRAC works to improve the nutrition, health, and well-being of people struggling against poverty-related hunger in the United States through advocacy, partnerships, and by advancing bold and equitable policy solutions. To attain this mission, FRAC engages in research, policy analysis and advocacy, coalition-building, outreach, technical assistance and training, and an array of communications strategies. In partnership with hundreds of national, state, and local nonprofit organizations, public agencies, corporations, and labor organizations, FRAC addresses hunger and food insecurity, and poverty as their root cause.  FRAC is currently working remotely. When it is safe to return, FRAC will be a hybrid office and this position will allow remote work but will require in office work for several days a month.

The CoS position reports directly to FRAC’s President and will work closely with other senior leaders of the organization. The CoS leads the integration, coordination, and metrics for strategy across the organization. On a day-to-day basis, the CoS oversees the office of the President and is responsible for ensuring successful flow of information to and from the President. The CoS’s primary duties include making time, information, and decision-making more effective for the President and FRAC’s leadership team. The CoS is a doer, with experience and comfort interacting with senior executives. The CoS is nimble, transparent, and thrives in a participatory leadership environment.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

·      Manage the office of the President and serve as a key point of contact for the leadership team and manage leadership team meetings.

·      Strengthen internal communications and develop and refine mechanisms for teams to work more effectively together.

·      Handle questions and requests on behalf of the President, using sound judgment in determining when and how the President should be engaged on an issue.

·      Serve as Project Manager for various initiatives as assigned by the President.

·      Manage the process for creation and implementation of the annual planning and execute a process for monitoring, evaluation, and revision of FRAC’s strategic plan.

·      Maintain a high-level awareness of all ongoing work throughout the organization and serve to build connections across different streams of work to avoid duplication and amplify efforts.

·      Foster an inclusive and collaborative culture that empowers and leverages the strengths of the leadership team.

·      Support the President in developing and strengthening internal and external relationships to support the strategic objectives.

·      Coordinate and prepare briefing memos, talking points, and background research to prepare the President for internal meetings and external engagements.

·      Support operational, managerial, and logistical needs of the President as necessary.

·      Monitor email correspondence closely, identifying follow-up tasks, and draft correspondence.

·      Support collaboration between the President and colleagues throughout FRAC on institutional strategy, development, network engagement, and stakeholder engagement.

·      Work with the Executive Assistant to the President and the Chief Operating Officer in preparation of Board materials for meetings, committees, and other correspondence.

·      Handle confidential information.

A well-qualified candidate will possess the following:

·      Display excellent and versatile writing skills including the ability to summarize detailed information.

·      Exhibit proactive and clear communications.

·      Demonstrate knowledge and application of strategic planning and project management principles. (PMP or similar advanced certification is desirable.)

·      Utilize sophisticated problem-solving capabilities and critical thinking.

·      Demonstrate an ability to demonstrate respect, professionalism, and sound judgment clearly and consistently with all people.

·      Have a sophisticated understanding of and interest in FRAC’s public policy areas.

·      Exercise high and strict levels of confidentiality and use professional judgment and discretion.

·      Have a familiarity with Outlook, Microsoft Office Suite, G-Suite, Slack and other web-based applications.

·      At least 2 years of experience implementing or monitoring an organizational evaluation systems.

·      Demonstrated commitment to working for social justice.

·      Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred.

·      Ability to travel up to 10% annually including evenings/weekends (once pandemic-based travel restrictions are lifted).

·      Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
