South Asian SOAR is looking for a remote, contract-based Communications & Advocacy Fellow to start immediately through October 2022.

About SOAR

South Asian SOAR (SOAR) is a collective of survivors, organizations, and allies building a national movement for joy, healing, and justice in the South Asian diaspora. We seek to dismantle and transform the culture and conditions that lead to violence by building the capacity, voice, and leadership of survivors, communities, and organizations. With our collective power and action, we will reimagine and create new systems that uphold care and healing.

Over the past year, we’ve built a network of 30+ organizations, launched our pilot survivor storytelling program, and launched national research and data collection initiatives.

The purpose of SOAR’s research and content is to uplift the voices of South Asian survivors and organizations, amplify SOAR’s programming, and to provide political and cultural education. We share this with the aim of creating change, building power, and supporting collective healing. survival, power, and healing.

About the role

This summer, SOAR is amplifying the often-invisibilized issue of gender-based violence in South Asian communities by launching its inaugural report.

We’re seeking a Communications Fellow to manage the communications around the launch and publication of this national report. The Communications Fellow will also manage SOAR’s content across multiple platforms, including growing its social media, supporting the launch of its blog, and growing its media presence.

This is a short-term, contract position with the possibility of growing into a full-time role.

  • Report Design & Distribution: Lead and support the design, reviewing, and editing of SOAR’s communications materials and reports
  • Press & Media: Support press and media outreach to amplify communications activities, including speaking engagements, announcements, and press releases

Communications Content & Infrastructure

  • Content Creation & Management: Create, curate, manage, and post content and media across multiple platforms (i.e. blog, social media channels, newsletters, etc.)
  • Communications Strategy: Co-design and help execute an overarching communications strategy for SOAR that elevates and disseminates SOAR’s content to wide and diverse audiences.
  • Communications Infrastructure: Develop repeatable and scalable processes for creating and sharing content, including setting and measuring relevant metrics and goals and managing a communications calendar

  • You are skilled at managing multiple timelines, goals, and projects simultaneously
  • You can create content that can reach multiple audiences in an approachable and accessible way, that promotes joy, healing, and critiques injustice
  • You have experience working with South Asian and/or BIPOC on issues of ending violence
  • You are proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud (in particular with InDesign and/or Illustrator), ProCreate, Canva, video editing, and web design

Your Qualities

  • You are committed to learning and deepening your own understanding of systems of oppression through dialogue, study, and humility.
  • You are an excellent collaborator who approaches relationships and teamwork with integrity and authenticity.
  • You value uplifting others as experts and supporting others to become experts themselves, centering those most impacted as the best leaders.
