Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of Latino and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island. With a membership of over 24,000 low-income New Yorkers, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our community: workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant civil rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.

Make the Road New York  https://maketheroadny.org/ is a multi-service organization. Our Adult Education Department offers English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), citizenship preparation, health job training classes and in-school and after-school youth programs. Our Community Organizing Projects help New Yorkers to implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. And our Departments of Legal, Health & Support Services provides direct legal representation, case management, and facilitated enrollment into public health insurance programs, training, and strategic support for members and organizing campaigns. Our attorneys and advocates specialize in labor and employment law, public benefits, disability benefits, housing law, healthcare and health insurance access, immigration, public education, domestic violence, and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) civil rights issues.

The Role

Part-time Adult Education Administrative Assistant (Adult Ed. Dept) – Brentwood, Long Island 

Hours: 8 hrs/week, might increase to 12-15 for about 3 months a year as needed 

Schedule: Varies (some evening, weekend hours will be required during busy seasons; see job description) Please note: MRNY staff are currently working both remotely and in-person through 2022. This position will be based at our Brentwood, LI office when our offices fully re-open, though this position will continue to require a mix of remote and in person work in 2023. Hybrid work schedules for this position which identify when work will be based in the office and when outside of the office will be created and updated weekly by the Adult Ed Admin leaders team based on weekly work priorities and in consultation with the Admin/Ops director.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

During Class Enrollment Periods: (day, afternoon, evening and weekend hours)

  • Call students on waiting list to provide information about classes and schedule intake appointments
  • Conduct Best Plus pre and post tests on site in our Brentwood, NY office (Test appts occur Jul-Sep, Nov-Jan, Mar-Apr)
  • Complete intake paperwork and database entry for registered students

 

During Non-Enrollment Periods: (day, afternoon and evening hours)

  • Answer and track waitlist phone calls for people interested in enrolling in classes during non-registration periods
  • Assist with street outreach efforts in the local area if needed
  • Work closely with teachers regarding class related issues, sending attendance reminders to teachers and other teacher’s needs
  • Help with filling out forms, answering and making phone calls, photocopying, faxing, filing and other administrative tasks
  • Attend trainings and meetings as needed

Team/Org Communication:

  • Attend all team, MRNY staff, and other meetings as needed
  • Stay on top of all emails relevant to job description and organizational needs
  • Maintain communication with other departments for any needs that arise
  • Assist in program development by participating in on-going reflection and change making process

Job Requirements:

  • Eligible to work in the US 
  • Full vaccination with an FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior to first day of employment.
  • HS Diploma from the US or another country
  • Administrative work experience
  • Fully bilingual (English/ Spanish) required   (reading, writing, listening and speaking)
  • Strong skills using with most or all of these: GSuite, Microsoft Office, Canva, Box, Zoom, and Google Voice  
  • Strong communication skills

Job preferences:

  • Experience working in immigrant services and/or community-based social justice organizations
  • Experience developing outreach strategy
  • Experience engaging in collaborative project development and educational programming/human services delivery with team members

Job Competencies:  extremely solid communication skills;  listening skills, technology competencies for: internal and external communication, tracking of case notes, data and grants management; Spanish language communication (verbally and in writing)

Salary & Benefits

Starting salary is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. MRNY offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days. The hourly rate for this position will average $21-23/hr.

Interviews will be held in early July  and onboarding will start the 2nd half of July.
