The Jewish Day School of Metropolitan Seattle (JDS), a Pre-School through 8th Grade independent school, is seeking a full-time Pre-School Lead Teacher, to add to the program’s existing team. The JDS mission is to provide an exceptional education that empowers children to be confident, wise, and compassionate upstanders who are committed to life-long learning and community engagement. Faculty at JDS focus on developing the "whole child," nurturing individual identity, imagination, and an inquiry mindset through a values-based approach and strong social-emotional foundation.   

The JDS Pre-School embraces a philosophy of inquiry and play-based learning, with an emergent-curriculum. Developing emotionally responsive relationships with children, families, and colleagues, and creating an engaging, dynamic classroom environment, the Pre-School Teacher inspires social-emotional growth, joy in learning, Jewish identity, and builds a foundation for academic readiness. Children are empowered to become caring friends, collaborators, problem solvers, and critical thinkers.    

The successful candidate has previous pre-school lead teaching experience, possesses a strong knowledge of child development and current best practices in early childhood education, an innovative mindset, ability to use flexible strategies appropriate for a variety of learners, and superb classroom management skills.  The ideal candidate is self-reflective and values ongoing professional growth in a highly collaborative working environment.  

All candidates must demonstrate respect for the school’s mission, values and philosophy and have an independent school perspective. This position is full-time with benefits and a competitive salary based on experience and training, and begins in January, 2021.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

·       Create and maintain a safe, engaging classroom environment that provides opportunities for individual, small, and full group learning activities, both indoors and outdoors (based on Covid-19 health and safety needs)  

·       Collaborate with the Pre-School Team on curriculum design, environment, activities, and practices

·       Design and facilitate developmentally aligned learning opportunities through inquiry, exploration, and hands- on experiences, that integrates early literacy, math, science, social studies, Judaism, and the arts 

·       Plan activities and routines to promote children’s development in the areas of language and communication, listening, social relationships, cognitive, executive function, fine and gross motor skills 

·       Incorporate routines and practices to engage children in creating a kind, caring classroom community grounded in Jewish values, with respect for the uniqueness of each child 

·       Plan and facilitate virtual learning activities when occasionally required 

·       Conduct ongoing observations to assess and document student learning and developmental growth, with the Developmental Standards Gold framework 

·       Develop positive, collaborative, partnerships with families and maintain ongoing communication in a variety of ways 

·       Communicate information to families about children’s progress and growth during conferences and through written reports 

·       Provide respectful guidance and direction to Assistant Teachers 

·       Participate in school life including admission, development, and community events 

Qualifications:   

·       Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education 

·       2 or more years as a Lead Pre-School Teacher with children ages 3 to 5 in a school setting 

·       Expertise in relevant components of the role: early childhood social and emotional development, inquiry, and play-based learning, emergent curriculum, early literacy and STEM, observation and assessment, and an ability to apply this to the teaching role

·       Ability to teach Jewish values, holidays, and traditions 

·       Ability to engage young children using a variety of developmentally appropriate instructional approaches  

·       Superb oral and written communication skills 

·       Strong technology skills for communication, organization, instruction, unit and lesson planning, and documentation
