 Title: Yakima Community Organizer

Salary: $25.48 - $26.44/hr

Earliest Starting Date: July 1, 2024

Reports To: Policy Director

Work Schedule: Normally works 9:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Friday , with some evening and weekend events as needed

Location: Latino Community Fund has a hybrid work model with employees working both in-office and remotely at home. This position will require the employee to come into our physical office in Yakima at least 2-3 times per week.


Job Summary:

Latino Community Fund of Washington (LCF) is seeking a Spanish-English bilingual community organizer to support LCF’s Civic Engagement and Advocacy efforts for the state-wide support of nonpartisan voter engagement, civic engagement projects, and during the state legislative session.

Progreso's mission is to ensure that Latino communities are fairly represented in Washington State’s social, economic and political systems to improve the quality of life for all Washingtonians. We believe that community-based support, civic engagement, and advocacy are needed to ensure that the needs of the Latino community are represented in decision making at the state level.


Primary Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

Community Organizing

●       Conduct weekly individual meetings with community members, families, partners;

●       Lead community organizing efforts to build a constituent base of informed and engaged Latinx community leaders for recruitment and retention of leaders with a focus on legislative session,

leadership summit, and elections projects;

●       Conduct educational activities and workshops for the community to inform them of issues impacting the Latinx community within the Yakima County area and how LCF builds organizing teams;

●       Engage in advocacy efforts on behalf of and with families, immigrants, and low-income community members;

●       Mobilize people to actions and events through phone banking, texting, canvassing (door-to-door), etc.;

●       Participate in community organizing efforts with Partner Organizations and Community Based Coalitions in Yakima County to build a constituent base of informed and engaged Latinx leaders;

●       Implement community-led campaigns and actions and act as a liaison with other teams at LCF;

●       Work with community members and leaders to identify issues and solutions, and take action with leaders to get results;

●       Participate in trainings and staff development; learning to lead trainings; and developing leaders to lead trainings through train-the-trainer models.


Community Partnership and Coalitions

●       Attend local, regional, and statewide coalition meetings to connect organizing efforts;

●       Develop and maintain strong coalitions among diverse groups of organizational stakeholders and community leaders.


Projects and Actions

●       Elections and Get out the Vote work in Central WA - implementing phone and text banks, canvassing (knocking on doors) to reach Latino/x/a voters;

●       Statewide Latinx Leadership Summit - supporting logistics, tech support, calling participants, outreach;

●       Legislative Session - supporting team in doing targeted outreach, researching bills, meeting with legislators, tracking legislation, training new leaders.


We are looking for someone who has:

●       JUSTICE-ORIENTED – a clear sense of what’s wrong, impatience in the face of that wrong, and a drive to address it.

●       RELATIONAL – ability to think, reflect, communicate, make judgments in complicated situations, and show flexibility. Interest in having relational meetings to get to know community members.

●       ABILITY TO RELATE ACROSS RACE AND CULTURE – able to build relationships and work with people other races, classes, generations, sexual orientations, gender identity, faiths.


Minimum Qualifications

●       Experience working directly with community members - whether through work, school, community groups (at least 1 year experience) to identify issues and build solutions;

●       Bilingual and Biliterate Spanish-language skills;

●       Strong commitment to enacting change to achieve social justice;

●       A strong sense of initiative and track record of follow-through and comfort in following up;

●       Strong organizational skills and experience self-managing to problem solve and achieve results;

●       Exceptional attention to detail and sense of curiosity and desire to learn and improve;

●       Experience working in a collaborative environment with diverse groups;

●       Interest in generating ideas with a team.

●       Excellent interpersonal, communication, and written skills / active listener;

●       Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google Apps;

●       Passion for the LCF Vision, Mission, and Core Values;

●       High ethical standards of confidentiality, strong people skills, an upbeat attitude & an ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

●       COVID-19 Vaccination (must be obtained and documentation submitted prior to employment) (Accommodations for religious and medical reasons will be considered.)


Desirable Qualifications

●       Strong community organizing skills and implementing projects at any scale;

●       Experience living and/or working in Yakima County and understand where to go to talk with Latino/a/x communities.
