The Communications Manager is responsible for the development and oversees the execution of communications plans and promotional schedules to promote PTA’s national campaigns, programs and other initiatives. This involves collaborating with other departments and other members of the communications team to envision and implement communications strategies that support outreach and advocacy efforts, as well as strengthen PTA’s position as the nation’s premier authority on family engagement, children’s health, welfare and education, as well as the association’s advocacy power to speak on behalf of every child. This position also is directly responsible for leading the association’s Back-to-School Campaign and Teacher Appreciation Week and manages vendors and consultants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop national communication strategies, activities and plans for various PTA programs, legislative and public policy initiatives, sponsor acquisitions, strategic alliance partner activities, special events, campaigns, membership promotions, and leadership training.
  • Serve as the communications liaison to other departments and work with department managers to ensure an integrated communications approach to projects across the association with a focus on results.
  • Work closely with Creative Services to identify appropriate marketing collateral, develop creative concepts and manage production for National PTA as a brand, as well as individual programs and initiatives. This duty entails developing appropriate communication strategies and materials in the right language and format for use and implementation by local and state PTAs.
  • Coordinate with the communications team to manage internal team workflow and deadlines and deliverables on projects and initiatives.
  • Assist director with communications, marketing, campaigns, and promotion budget development and tracking.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong strategic communications and marketing skills to quickly assess situations and opportunities, recommend and execute.
  • Highly creative to generate innovative ideas for campaigns and promotions to position and communicate PTA initiatives.
  • Strategic thinker with ability to focus on the details to develop comprehensive plans that integrate across the organization.
  • Excellent communications and promotional writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver effective communications plans, and marketing campaigns.
  • Established network of strategic communications and marketing agencies and consultants to draw on for third-party consultation and supplemental support of department assignments.
  • Oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, meet tight deadlines, and thrive under pressure.
  • Knowledge of issues related to parenting, education, children’s health and welfare, and advocacy.
  • Working knowledge of SharePoint, Google Drive, Office 365 and social media platforms

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 to 7 years of experience in developing and implementing integrated communications and marketing strategies, activities, campaigns and special events.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, marketing, journalism, communications or related field is required.
  • Experience in writing and editing promotional materials, such as direct mail, sales and marketing collateral (i.e., brochures, fliers, toolkits and leader’s guides, advertising copy, and campaigns).

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed in a professional office environment and remotely, currently in a hybrid structure. The incumbent should plan on partial or full in-person work for this position.
  • The position may require occasional evening and weekend work for special programs and/or events
  • Incumbent routinely uses standard office equipment including computers, phones, photocopiers, etc.
  • This is a largely sedentary role. Routine activities and special events may require the ability to lift files, packages, and related materials weighing up to 20 lbs. and to bend or stand as necessary
  • Position located in NPTA, Alexandria, VA headquarters and requires occasional travel domestically
