Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Instructor

Vision Ed Inc is a nonprofit education organization that brings project-based STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) programming to students in underrepresented and underserved communities throughout the New York City area. To-date, we have served over 2,000 children in grades K-12, through original and collaborative programming.  

We are looking for qualified Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Instructors to teach social-emotional skills to students in elementary and/or high school in Brooklyn. This is a unique opportunity for individuals who want to make a difference in the social and emotional health of students in NYC public schools. You will be teaching from an original curriculum designed by Vision Ed Inc. This position will require the instructor to be adaptive and work closely with the Program Director to communicate any additional needs for the program.

This SEL program is part of a larger, state-funded grant program, for which Vision Ed Inc is the lead provider. The instructor will work closely with the Executive Director, Program Director, Site Coordinator, and other school staff and administration.

Pay is $40-50 per hour. Classes are generally about 40-45 minutes long and the number of classes and days of the week will be determined on the placement that you receive. We are looking for someone to start in the fall of the 2022-23 school year.

Responsibilities:

• Teach multiple 45-minute classes per day in SEL for the 2022-23 school year. (Number of days to be determined)
• Manage different learning styles and personalities in a classroom environment.
• Ability to differentiate instruction based on students’ needs.
• Help students to learn social-emotional skills through student-centered teaching style and participatory learning.
• Support students working independently and in a large group setting.
• Offer feedback to students who require more guidance in a supportive way.
• Take attendance each day via VEI-provided sign-in sheets and enter it digitally at the end of each shift.
• Maintain a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment
• Familiarize yourself with the work, programming, organizational structure, and mission/values of VEI and our activities.
• Work in collaboration with other staff as well as independently.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Individuals with background and/or certification in Social Work or other related field are strongly encouraged to apply; however, this is not a requirement
• Experience in social-emotional learning
• Experience teaching or mentoring kids
• Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds
• Excellent grammar and presentation skills
• Strong organizational skills 
• Strong classroom management skills
• Must show initiative, creativity, and ability to work independently
• Must be self-motivated and ability to maintain a positive attitude
