Pay: `                          $20 per hour / 24 hours per week

*We welcome applicants from outside the United States, however, we do want to note that the individual in the position will be expected to ensure their work hours overlap with standard work hours for a NY-based office.

**Although not required, strong preference for an individual with proficiency in French and/or Arabic.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Analyst reports to and works with the Senior Program and Research Manager (SPRM) to analyze the work of the UN Security Council to support broader advocacy efforts of the NGO Working Group (“NGOWG”) on Women, Peace and Security (“WPS”). The Analyst will also work with the Executive Director and Program Officer as needed.

The work of the analyst will primarily contribute to analysis and research that is published in various formats that will examine the way in which the UN Security Council and the UN system are meeting women, peace and security obligations, notably those related to women’s rights in crisis and conflict-affected settings, and ensuring women’s full, equal, and meaningful participation in peace and political processes.

This position is ideal for an individual with knowledge of women, peace and security, experience in qualitative data analysis, specifically content and/or discourse analysis, and a desire to contribute meaningfully to efforts to hold stakeholders responsible for protecting women’s human rights.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support development of research framework: In coordination with the SPRM, refine research framework to guide analysis, including identification of codes and tags.
• Data collection, extraction, processing and analysis: Collect information related to the work of the UN Security, extract relevant data, process, code using a range of technical tools, and assist in drawing analytical conclusions from the data.
• Data visualization: Develop visualizations to reflect analytical conclusions and clearly highlight key findings.
• Support the drafting of analytical outputs: Contribute to the drafting of written summary and analysis of findings published in various formats.
• Ad-hoc support for ongoing advocacy efforts: As needed, provide support for social media, fact-checking and translation of documents, and other operational support. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Prefer an individual with expertise and knowledge of peace, security, human rights, and/or gender issues, and qualitative / quantitative data analysis, derived via a combination of academic and/or professional experience:

• Peace, security, human rights and/or gender: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in international relations, women’s or gender studies, human rights, conflict or post-conflict studies, or a closely related discipline and/or two years equivalent professional experience.
• Qualitative / quantitative data analysis: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in data analysis, qualitative research and inquiry, social research, public policy, public administration, data science, data visualization, or a closely related discipline or two years equivalent professional experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Demonstrated passion for women’s rights and international issues.
• Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills with the ability to research a wide range of topics using multiple sources, drawing on diverse analytical lenses, including feminist and intersectional approaches.
• Strong qualitative data analysis technical skills, including data collection, processing, data coding, and analysis.
• Strong ability to synthesize policy documents, identifying relevant key points, facts, and statistics that help explain complicated policy topics.
• Comfortable working in an environment that is responsive to peace and security developments, requiring flexibility and willingness to contribute where needed as advocacy priorities shift.
• Ability to work in a small team, both independently and collaboratively.
• Strong attention to detail and able to identify gaps, errors, and inconsistencies.
• Fluency in written and spoken English, with proficiency in French and/or Arabic an asset.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires use of a computer for eight hours per day, three days per week.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The preference is that the individual is based in New York; in New York, the position will be located in a small office in New York City. The incumbent will work from a shared office with a door. There is an elevator in this multi-story building.

If the individual is based remotely, the individual is responsible for ensuring their workspace has access to all necessary utilities to ensure they can carry out job functions.
