About GIFCT

The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) envisions a world in which the technology sector marshals its collective creativity and capacity to render terrorists and violent extremists ineffective online. In every aspect of our work, GIFCT aims to be transparent, inclusive, and respectful of the fundamental and universal human rights that terrorists and violent extremists seek to undermine.

Position Summary

The Communications and External Relations Lead supports the Executive Director and the organization in shaping the organization’s external relations and strategic communications. They create impactful campaigns promoting GIFCT's mission, values, and activities, and work with GIFCT teams and member companies, as relevant, to create communication materials, manage the organization’s social media presence, and support communications relating to GIFCT events, activities, and outputs. Additionally, the role involves supporting the Executive Director’s Office to foster a consistent approach to communications and materials across the organization, which can include drafting and preparing communications materials for the Executive Director, and coordinating with GIFCT team members and member companies, as needed, regarding key communications materials and events. 

Key Responsibilities

Communications

  • Develop and deliver communications materials and plans in consultation with Executive Director Office (EDO) to ensure accurate and far-reaching representation of the organization that aligns with the Executive Director’s strategic objectives (including preparing public statements/press releases, working with companies to announce their GIFCT membership and GIFCT activities, managing our media policy for external engagement requests and press inquiries, etc.).
  • Manage the organization’s communications channels and digital platforms, including email(s), website(s), and social media accounts and identify gaps or opportunities to further develop the organization’s presence online. Identify opportunities to enhance public engagement and support the development of internally-developed content for the website, including blog posts, Staff Insights and templates for use by internal and external contributors.
  • Develop communication campaigns in consultation with EDO that highlight the organizations we work with, support for key stakeholder groups such as current and incoming members, and for key events for the organization.
  • Manage the drafting and development of the Annual Report and other public-facing deliverables, such as newsletters, and membership material, produced in coordination with relevant leads.
  • Provide editorial support and inputs for internal publications and communications materials, in coordination with the Executive Director’s Office, as well as for virtual events and related communications materials.
  • Set up, oversee staff’s use of, and maintain our CRM database.
  • Liaise with designers, copy-editors, and other communications contractors.
  • Join the leadership team in internal and external meetings, as needed.

Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications and Experience

  • MA or equivalent work experience.
  • 6-9 years experience in a communications role and experience working with non-profit organizations 
  • Proficient in Google Suite apps, Microsoft Office, MailChimp, social media platforms; experience with website development desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Familiarity with tech, counterterrorism and countering violent extremism issues, and international affairs, is desirable.
  • Resourcefulness and ability to work both independently and as part of a multi-functional team, prioritize but also remain flexible, and have the  ability to meet deadlines and take ownership of a wide range of responsibilities.
  • Availability to occasionally travel both domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Candidate must have fluency in English; additional proficiency in one of the UN working languages (French, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Spanish) is desirable.
  • Strong commitment to GIFCT’s mission, purpose and values.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
