The Association of Community Human Service Agencies (ACHSA) is a nonprofit association representing 87 community mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice agencies throughout Los Angeles County. The mission of ACHSA is to elevate the collective voice of service providers to advance the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities through policy, advocacy, and support. We are seeking a Mental Health Policy Associate who is dedicated to working towards a future where:

• Individuals, children, and families can access the supportive services they need.

• Service providers have the support and resources to do transformative work in communities across L.A. County.

• Systems of care are effective and equitable for all individuals, families, and communities.

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Mental Health Policy Director, the Policy Associate provides both administrative and policy support to the organization and mental health committees and work groups. At the outset, it is expected that at least 50 percent of time spent will be on administrative tasks, including scheduling/coordinating meetings and taking/preparing minutes. The position requires substantial flexibility in meeting the organization's overall needs, with emphasis on administrative versus policy support needs varying over time. The Mental Health Policy Associate works alongside ACHSA staff towards the achievement of the Association’s three strategic plan goals:

1) Advocate for system-level change to improve service delivery, access, and outcomes for individuals, families, and communities in Los Angeles County.

2) Support ACHSA member agencies in adapting and diversifying their services and funding to enhance equity, integrated care, and the continuum of care.

3) Position ACHSA as the leading source of information on human services in L.A. County.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs a variety of administrative duties including making meeting arrangements; notifying the Membership of committee meetings; assembling meeting materials; and maintaining well organized files and data.

• Prepares minutes for meetings of the Board of Directors, the general Membership, and mental health policy committees of the Association.

• Drafts newsletter articles, letters and documents; conducts research; analyzes data; tracks current news media information; and handles select policy advocacy issues.

• Represents the Association at select external meetings and provides follow-up.

• Develops materials and presentations for ACHSA meetings.

• Responds to Membership inquiries, issues, and concerns.

• Helps create mental health content for social media posts in collaboration with the Communications and Membership Coordinator.

• Performs other duties and responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the Mental Health Policy Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required

• Bachelor's degree and prior administrative experience.  Policy experience and knowledge of mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice issues are desirable.

• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and ability to work on a variety of projects at the same time. This requires outstanding organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to prioritize work on an ongoing basis.

• Superior written and oral communication skills, along with exceptional computer skills.

• Experience with data collection and basic statistical analyses.

• Outstanding interpersonal skills, the ability to exercise independent judgment and take initiative, and a commitment to a high level of quality and attention to detail.

• Ability to travel within L.A. County for stakeholder meetings and member agency visits.

Experience and Skills Desired

• Technical competency and knowledge of Los Angeles County mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice issues desirable.

• ACHSA strives to build a diverse staff with a variety of life experiences and perspectives. We encourage candidates to apply even if they do not meet all of the required criteria listed above. We will consider a combination of work experience and/or lived experience in our recruitment.
