The Chief Programs Officer is responsible for working collaboratively across the organization to shape and guide operational systems and processes to ensure mission effectiveness and success as Rethink expands nationally. This position is a key member of the senior management team and will oversee internal and external operations, programs, and community impact. The candidate must establish and lead a positive culture, ensure effective communication between departments and guide the organization’s strategy. The successful candidate is a seasoned operations and programs leader who is strategic, innovative, and has led an organization through extensive expansion. 


Rethink Food is a non profit organization on a mission to create a more sustainable and equitable food system. We work to create smart, sustainable solutions to utilize excess food to address food insecurity. Rethink Food and our Rethink Certified restaurant partners prepare nutritious, culturally celebrated meals that community-based organizations deliver each week to thousands of local neighbors impacted by food insecurity. Since April 2020, Rethink Food has served over 5.5 million meals, directed $25 million to 100+ restaurants across New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Nashville, and Miami, and partnered with 185+ CBOs. Key Responsibilities:

  • Set and maintain the organizational vision, strategy and leadership related to operations and programs. 
  • Ensure operational excellence, compliance and cultural competence as Rethink scales nationally. 
  • Work in partnership with CEO, CDO, and CFO to create a five year strategic plan and implement new processes and approaches to achieve it.
  • Advise the CEO and senior leadership team on all facets of operations; effectively communicate and advocate for improvements in organizational effectiveness and champions problem-solving.
  • Assist in fundraising activities through meeting with potential donors, working with existing donors, and presenting quarterly reports to the Board of Directors. 
  • Represent the organization externally, as needed 

Operations:

  • Driver of organizational agility; understands how organizations work, and how to adapt quickly and succeed in rapidly changing environments. 
  • Experience improving efficiencies and effectiveness of complex work streams.
  • Identify opportunities for Rethink to leverage cross-program strengths to take advantage of new opportunities and/or to address organizational challenges.
  • Prepare and submit an annual operational budget, manage effectively within this budget, and report accurately on progress made and challenges encountered.
  • Provide analytical support to Rethink’s internal management team including development of internal management reporting capabilities; leverage data to lead the evaluation of organizational performance. 
  • Work with CFO to improve administrative and operational accounting services such as treasury management, accounts payable, and purchasing.
  • Establish strategy and work plan for Rethink’s two commissary kitchens (located in NYC and Miami), food procurement, and logistics. 
  • Establish strategy for areas of the business that can be improved with technology, increased security and automation. 

Programs: 

  • Lead strategy and expand Rethink’s two primary programs for accomplishing our mission: sustainability services (excess food utilization) and restaurant partnerships (Rethink Certified). 
  • Manage the programmatic operation of the organization and ensure that the expectations of funders, partners, clients, and community stakeholders are met.
  • Promote and engage open-mindedness and a culture of learning. Source data on the effectiveness of the strategies and programming, and help adapt approaches as necessary.

Strategic Plan Implementation:

  • Provide programmatic leadership and input for all strategic plan implementation processes with the CEO and senior leadership team. 
  • Develop and implement a system for tracking and reporting on the progress of the strategic plan implementation. 
  • Ensure that Rethink is adhering to the strategic plan, delivering status reports to the board.

Team Development/Leadership:

  • Effective people manager who actively provides direction, guidance and feedback to strengthen knowledge, develop skills, accomplish tasks and solve problems.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.


Skills Knowledge and Expertise:

  • 10-15 years of experience in senior leadership position in a sophisticated, complex and fast-paced environment; non profit experience required 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or Management preferred
  • Creative, resourceful thinker with the ability to create innovative solutions
  • Substantial experience in operations, program development and management, and people and culture. 
  • Experience in building and cultivating community networks, including partnering with community based organizations; demonstrated knowledge of best approaches in working with diverse communities. 
  • Highly effective communicator with excellent leadership presence, internally and externally.
  • Results-proven track record of exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation; evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, experience, and judgment; high level of business acumen including successful P&L management; the ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget; and problem solving, project management, and creative resourcefulness.
  • Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into the organizational plan.
  • Value and have deep knowledge in diversity, equity and inclusion approaches in leading a high-performance team and organization.
  • Exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; a team builder who has experience in scaling up organizations; ability to connect staff both on an individual level and in large groups; capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower top-notch leaders from the bottom up, lead from the top down, cultivate entrepreneurship, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team so as to put people in a position to succeed.
