Reporting to the Executive Director, the Managing Director of People and Operations will serve as City Year Washington, DC’s main driver of site culture. The Managing Director will collaborate with other leaders to center our people and organizational values when leading the day-to-day operations of our site. This is a dual role with a focus on people (culture, HR practices, hiring, development) and operations (budgeting, expense tracking, office management, technology) and requires the ability to juggle and balance strategic and tactical work on a regular basis.


What You Will Do

Develop and implement a long-term people and culture plan

Lead the development of a long-term people and culture plan informed by data. Use a results-focused approach to increasing staff engagement year-over-year based on culture amp results and address employee relations challenges as they arise. Coach Executive Leadership team and Senior Leadership team members on people management and strategy.


Lead the process to hire, onboard, and develop staff

Collaborate with the executive leadership team and hiring managers to hire and onboard new staff members. Develop a strategic and responsive approach to staff professional development.


Develop and implement an equity plan for CYDC

Collaborate with the equity council, the executive leadership team, and others at the site to create a three-year equity plan for CYDC to support our journey to be an anti-racist organization committed to equity. Implement and adjust that plan as we learn together.


Lead Site Operations and Finance

Support the office and site operations, including leading the processes related to technology, expense tracking, budgeting, and office operations to ensure staff and corps members are supported. Ensure site compliance with key processes. Collaborate with other leaders on projects related to site operations through the year. Coordinate with headquarters and implement COVID policies related to staff and AmeriCorps members.

Specifically, you will bring:

  • Organization and project management skills; able to manage multiple tasks, priorities, and stakeholders effectively in a changing and ambiguous environment; ability to generate results and complete projects within deadlines.
  • Written and oral communication skills, including the proven ability to teach others new processes.
  • Problem-solving skills, with experience building equitable, human-centered processes and finding creative solutions to balance competing priorities.
  • Track record of building authentic partnerships and relationships with community members and organizations rooted in anti-racist practices.
  • Demonstrated a lived commitment to apply racial, gender and economic justice lenses in both personal and workplace contexts.
  • Demonstrated commitment to curiosity and humility as a life-long learner, seeking diverse perspectives and opportunities for self-growth.
  • Business knowledge: Displays a depth of understanding of the business including key business and functions and processes and a passion to build business insight. Experience managing budgets and finance.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting, and coaching people.
